분포; 서북 태평양/남한의 전 연안, 일본의 홋카이도 이남, 타이완, 중국의 중부 이북 해안에 분포.
일반개요; 몸색은 금속성 광택을 가진 흑회색, 은회색이다. 윤곽이 뚜렷하지 않은 여러 개(7~9개)의 검회색 수직 무늬가 있다. 암초 지역, 내만, 기수에 서식하며 봄에 내만에서 산란하고 겨울철에는 깊은 수심으로 이동한다. 감상어, 먹도미, 감성도미, 감셍이, 구릿, 맹이, 남정바리 등의 방언 이름들이 있다. 암수한몸으로 태어난다. 웅성선숙(雄性先熟) 형식이다. 부화하면 수컷이지만 1년 정도 지나 체장이 10cm 정도 되면 몸에 난세포가 생기고 2년 정도 되면 난소와 정소가 함께 존재하는 암수동체가 된다. 4~5년 지나면 대부분 암컷이 된다. 연체동물과 갯지렁이류를 주식한다.

Distribution: All around coasts of South Korea, southward from Hokkaido of Japan, Taiwan, middle and north coasts of China. Not occurring in the Ryukyu Islands.
General: Metalic grey and bluish grey in body color. Several indistinct vertical dark lines on body. Hermaphroditic in young, male adult turns to female after 4~5 years, most adults female. Spawns from spring to early summer, deeper depth in winter. Found in bays, shallow rocky reefs, and in brackish waters. Feeds on mollusks and polychaets.
