(Large bitterling)
Acheilognathus majusculus(Kim & Yang, 1998). 27.5 cm SL
Korean name/keun-jul-nap-ja-ru(큰줄납자루)
Dorsal spines 3, Dorsal soft rays 8, Anal spines 3, Anal soft rays 7-8. LL/39-40

Distribution; Asia/endemic to south Korea; found in Somjin river including its tributary and some part of Nak-dong river.
General; Endemic to southern Korea. Relatively large species in its genus members. Body compressed, depth not so high. Head small, snout depressed and slightly protruded. Eye large, located on mid head. Maxilla short. Horse shoe shaped mouth is relatively large, and posited below snout. Barbel present, its length slightly longer than half of eye diameter. Space between eyes broad and mid part slightly convex. Scales large and cycloid. Lateral line complete. Origin of dorsal fin located slightly behin pelvic fin. Margin of dorsal fin slightly rounded outwards. Caudal fin deeply caved in at the midlevel.

Pale greenish hue in body color. A green stripe from 5th∼6th scale of lateral line to caudal fin base, a few dark blue stripes above this line, periphery of dorsal and caudal fins reddish, inner areas white. Small faint blackish spots concentrated in anal fin, white stripe absent in periphery. Male show blue nuptial color in spawning season and with thick pad of wart process on snout.

Found in shallow mid streams with developed weeds. Omnivorous, feeds on aquatic insects and attached algae. Spawn in May to June, female lay eggs inside fresh water clams through its spawning duct, young hatch and remain within the bivalve until they can swim.

The species is similar to Acheilognathus yamatsutae, but distinguished from the latter and congeners by the combination of the following characteristics: 15–21 gill rakers, 37–40 vertebrae, longer barbel, greenish body coloration, nuptial color of males and slightly protrusive snout. Acheilognathus majusculus(large bitterling) and Acheilognathus yamatsutae(Korean striped bitterling) are sympatric species in the Nak-dong river, Acheilognathus majusculus resides deeper depth than Acheilognathus yamatsutae where the bottom rather rocky.
