Distribution; Circumglobal, tropical to temperate. Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, including southern Korea, except Mediterranean.
General; This species is circumglobal in deep waters. There is little known about the current population status, as it is such a deep-dwelling fish. There are numerous sampling and sighting records for this species, especially in the western Atlantic and Pacific. It is a deep benthopelagic species found from 730-2,560 m depth; this also puts it out of reach of most trawlers and other anthropogenic threats. This species is therefore listed as Least Concern.

This species is benthopelagic and generally occurs on the middle and lower slope primarily above the 4°C isotherm. It has been known to hover within a few metres of substrate, parallel to it or inclined at varying angles. This species feeds on polychaetes, pelecypods, amphipods and other benthic prey. It is not unique to particular substrate, but is found over hard-, rocky- and soft-bottom substrata.

The Allied Halosaur(=Gilbert's halosaurid fish) has an elongate body, body behind the anus very narrow and with an attenuate tail. It has a pointed snout that extends well in front of the mouth. With small eyes. There is a single short based dorsal fin and a long based anal fin that extends to the end of the tail. First ray of dorsal fin very short and spine-like. Pectoral fin short and falling far anterior from origin of ventral fin. Dorsal fin located at mid body some distance near to head. Dorsal and pelvic fins inserted nearly opposite each other, the pelvic fin only slightly anterior to the origin of the dorsal fin. The body is scaled. Lateral line well developed with enlarged scales along the lateral line. Preanal lateral line scales 25-31. Top of snout and head scaleless, opercle scaleless. Palatine tooth patches in contact medially. Anterior gill arch with 13-15 rakers. Body white to grey-brown in color, underside darker.  Size: to about 55 cm (gnathoproctal length to about 20 cm).

Reproduction: spawning appears to be seasonal and out of phase with sympatric congeners. In the western North Atlantic a female to male sex ratio of about 2:1 has been determined. Sexually dimorphic: males with mature gonads have enlarged posterior nostrils, dark tubular anterior nostrils and dark pigmentation on the top of the snout.
