Oder Anguilliformes Family Anguillidae(Freshwater eels) Distribution; Indo-Pacific/southern Korea, southern Japan, Taiwan, China, Philippines, Indonesia, New Guinea, East Africa, and French Polynesia Has long and slender body, cylindrical in cross section and a little compressed in caudal portion. Live in freshwater areas as adults, estuaries and seas as young. Found in lowland rivers as well as upland tributaries. While in river, the sex gland does not develop. But in winter when they move from the stream to river mouth, the sex gland begins to develop as mature individuals go to deep sea to breed. The spawning grounds are deep sea gullies among the south of the Philippines, east of Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Eels begin life as flat and transparent larvae, called leptocephali(or leptocephalus). Eel larvae drift in the surface waters of the sea, feeding on marine snow, small particles that float in the water. Eel larvae then metamorphose into glass eels and then become elvers before finally seeking out their juvenile and adult habitats. Freshwater elvers travel upstream and are forced to climb up obstructions, such as weirs, dam walls, and natural waterfalls. Are active at night, feeding on a wide range of prey, especially crabs, frogs and fish. An eel habitat, Cheonjiyeon Waterfalls' pond, is a natural monument in South Korea. |
