분포; 서대서양/캐나다의 노바스코샤, 멕시코 만 북부에서 브라질까지 분포. 버뮤다, 바하마, 서인도 제도에는 없음.
일반개요; “씨브림”을 빼고 단순히 “쉬프헤드(Sheepshead)”라고도 부른다. 최대 76 cm 이상이지만 보통 30-50 cm 크기이다. 만이나 기수에 살며 때에 따라 민물에도 들어간다. 교각 부근에서 잘 발견되며 선착장이나 갯바위에서 낚시로 잡는다. 체고가 높고 옆으로 납작하며 몸은 회색 바탕이며 5개 내지 6개의 검은 수직 띠 무늬가 있다. 등지느러미 가시가 날카롭고 강하다. 굴, 조개, 기타 이매 패류와 따개비류, 게, 기타 갑각류를 먹는다. 입이 단단하며 뭉툭한 이빨들이 여러 줄로 나 있다. 앞쪽 이빨은 사람의 이빨과 비슷하게 생겨서 먹이의 단단한 껍질을 부숴먹기에 유리하다. 맛있는 식용어로 사용된다.

Distribution; Western Atlantic: Nova Scotia, Canada and northern Gulf of Mexico to Brazil. Absent in Bermuda, the Bahamas, the West Indies and Grenada
General; Also known as simply “Sheepshead”. A marine fish that grows to 76 cm, but commonly reaches 30 to 50 cm. Inhabits bays and estuaries. Freely enters brackish waters; sometimes enters freshwaters. Commonly found around pilings. Caught by anglers from jetties or rocky shores. It is deep and compressed in body shape, with five or six dark bars on the side of the body over a gray background. It has sharp dorsal spines. Its diet consists of oysters, clams, and other bivalves, and barnacles, fiddler crabs, and other crustaceans. It has a hard mouth, with several rows of stubby teeth – the frontal ones roughly resembling human teeth – which help crush the shells of prey. An excellent food fish.
