Distribution; Northwest Pacific/southern Korea, southern Japan, Taiwan, and the East China Sea.
General; Body elongated. Head and trunk cylindrical but slightly compressed, posterior half of body compressed. Dorsal-fin origin well before gill opening. Snout relatively long, the tip moderately blunt. Upper jaw projecting slightly beyond tip of lower jaw, Upper lip with free narrow upturned labial flange. Eye relatively large, eye diameter a little shorter than length of snout. Anterior nostril tubular, locating on surface of near the tip of snout. Posterior nostril oval shape, located a little before and middle level of eye. The rictus of mouth reaching to below middle of eye. Has tongue that is short, broad and free anterior. Air bladder is connected to the tip of the stomach anteriorly by a pneumatic duct. Caudal fin short. Tail longer than head and trunk combined, and stout in touch.

Teeth small, conical, and tip mostly blunt. Teeth on premaxiillary slightly exposed when mouth closed. Teeth of upper jaw setting irregularly in 3 to 4 rows anteriorly, rather regularly in 2 rows posteriorly; on lower jaw in irregularly 5 to 6 rows anteriorly, and 2 rows posteriorly. Vomerine teeth sharp anteriorly, followed by large and stout teeth, set in 3 to 4 rows, forming a narrow elongate patch ending behind midpoint of maxillary tooth patch. Pharyngeal teeth rather large, and pointed. Sensory pores of head and lateral line well developed. Head sensory pores on the side of head and occipital region 28 in total number, 6 on supraorbital canal, 8 on infraorbital canal, 8 on mandibular canal, 3 on peropercular canal and 3 supratemporal commissure respectively(6+8+8+3+3=28).

Body uniformly whitish or yellowish gray, slightly paler ventrally, dorsal and anal fins with a very thin black margin. Head and snout either light color or with indistinct bands. Ariosoma majus is very similar to A. shiroanago but differs from the latter in having fewer total vertebrae and lateral-line pores. It is also similar to A. anago in having a very similar vertebral formula and number of lateral-line pores. However, it differs from the latter in having a blunter snout, very narrow dark margins on the vertical fins and lacking indistinct bars across the dorsal surface of the head.
