분포; 인도•서태평양/한국의 남해와 서해 남부, 일본 남부, 서태평양과 인도양의 열대 해역에 분포.
일반개요; 몸과 머리는 측편되었고 체고가 높으면서 미병부가 가늘어서 원형에 가깝다. 어미는 제2등지느러미와 뒷지느러미 중앙 부분의 연조들이 실처럼 길게 연장되었다(※수컷 어미들만 연장된 지느러미를 가지고 있다는 문헌이 있다). 배지느러미는 매우 길고 전면의 가시부분만 빼고 검정색인데다가 몸 쪽으로 접으면 복부 중심에 있는 홈 속으로 들어가 검정색이 보이지 않는 두드러진 특징 때문에 일찍이 동종이 가능했던 종이다. 측선은 아가미뚜껑 뒤에서 시작되어 둥글게 휘어져 내려와 몸 중앙에서 꼬리지느러미 앞까지 일직선으로 이어진다. 측선 위에 모비늘 31~37개가 있다. 등쪽은 청색, 배쪽은 은백색이다. 연안의 표층에서 유영생활을 하며 새우, 요각류, 갑각류, 작은 물고기를 잡아먹는다.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific/southern and west southern Korea, southern Japan, tropical waters in Indian and West Pacific Oceans.
General: Body and head compressed. Deep depth with narrow peduncle. Adult male have prolonged middle rays in the soft dorsal and anal fins. Pelvic fin long and black which fit into a groove along the midline of the belly when depressed(black color not seen). 31~37 scutes along its straight lateral line. Blue dorsally, silver white ventrally. Common in shallow coastal waters where it often swims near the surface. Feeds mainly on shrimps, copepods, decapod crustaceans and small fishes.
