Distribution; Eastern Atlantic(West Africa)/From Namibia to Mauritania, Macaronesian Islands including Madeira, Cape Verde Islands and the Canary Islands. Also recorded in Brazil in Espirito Santo and St. Paul's rocks, but these may be misidentification of A. maculatus.
General; The Atlantic Trumpetfish is also called the East Atlantic Trumpetfish. “Trumpetfish” is sometimes referred to as Coronetfish, but many believe this is not appropriate. Atlantic Trumpetfish has extremely elongated and laterally compressed body(especially rearward). Snout extremely long and tubular. Mouth small facing upward. Teeth in lower jaw but not upper. Nostrils near eye. Chin with a short barbel. Dorsal fin with spines separated into separate finlets. The second dorsal and anal fins are located far behind the body and have the same shape and size and are located symmetrically. Pelvic fin small and inserted closer to anal fin than pectoral fin. Pectoral fin small and rounded. Caudal fin small and rounded without a filament. Lateral line present. Rough scales cover most of body but head and upper trunk.

Color; It has the ability to change colour, either to communicate their excitement or to camouflage them. The most frequent colours recorded are brown, reddish-brown, pale gray, green, orange to yellow, or intermediate shades or even blue. Sometimes there are several white lines or bands on the head and body and black spots on the dorsum. The color of the body between the dorsal fin and anal fin and the caudal peduncle are darker or blacker than the rest body. Four white spots on the dark part between dorsal and anal fins, and three white vertical bands on the caudal peduncle. The caudal fin has a pair of black spots. The dorsal and anal fins are semitransparent. One or two black spots at the front of the dorsal and anal fins. There are several black dots on the edge of the body adjacent to the base of the dorsal and anal fins, and in some cases, these dots are connected to each other to form a black band. Trumpetfish can lighten or darken their body color to show off or hide their patterns, and they can change their background to different solid colors.

Aulostomus strigosus is a demersal, coastal species that is found over rocky or coral substrates in inshore waters. Its main prey is fish but is also thought feed on animals found on the substrate. A. strigosus is also considered a "follower" fish in that it will swim with schools of other species of fish, especially large, herbivorous fishes, for both protection and to exploit foraging opportunities. When hunting smaller prey trumpetfish will hang vertically in the water column, head pointed downwards, striking at prey when the opportunity arises. Like many fish, trumpetfishes have an elaborate courtship display, in which they employ their colour-changing abilities, so often used for camouflage. Oviparous, gonochorous, with pelagic eggs. A. strigosus are frequent prey of Pandion haliaetus in Cape Verde Islands and possibly elsewhere within their range.

Distribution map of the Atlantic trumpetfish(or East Atlantic trumpetfish/Aulostomus strigosus). There is a claim that the West Atlantic distribution of Brazil is due to the misidentification of the west Atlantic species(Aulostomus maculatus) as East Atlantic species(Aulostomus strigosus).
