분포; 인도•서태평양/한국의 남해, 일본 남부, 남중국해, 서태평양, 홍해 포함 인도양에 분포.
일반개요; 몸과 머리는 측편되었고 체고가 높다. 몸은 은색이다. 눈지름은 주둥이 길이와 비슷하다. 측선 위 등쪽에 10~15개의 어두운 수직 무늬가 있다. 체측 중심에 있는 반점들은 살아있을 때 노랑색일수도 있다. 머리와 가슴을 제외한 몸 전체에 작은 비늘이 덮여 있다. 제2극조는 길게 연장되었다. 튀어나오는 입이며 아래 방향으로 돌출된다. 수심 20~50m의 연안, 내만 또는 기수에 서식한다. 무리를 짓는다. 작은 물고기, 갯지렁이류, 갑각류를 먹는다.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific/southern Korea, southern Japan, South China Sea, western Pacific, Indian Ocean including Red Sea.
General: Body and head compressed with deep depth. Silvery body. Diameter of eye almost equal to snout length. Body with 10~15 vertical dark bands above lateral line. 2nd dorsal spine elongated into filament. Head and thorax naked. Protracted mouth pointing downward. Blotches along the middle side may be yellowish when alive. Found in coastal waters of 20~50m depth. May enter semiclosed sea areas and estuaries. Form schools. Feed on polychaetes, small crustaceans and small fish.
