Difference in pattern between Barbatula toni and Barbatula nuda; patterns of Barbatula toni are bolder than Barbatula nuda.

Distribution; Asia/Northern region species; Im-jin river, Northern Han river in South Korea, streams in North Korea, China and Mongolia.
General; The name “Continental stone loach” derived from the fact that distributing region not limited within Korea but extended broader, e.g; China and Mongolia. Body slender and elongated, anteriorly cylindrical, compressed posteriorly. Scales small and embedded under skin, absent in head. Head slightly depressed, mouth placed below snout, 3 pairs of barbels around upper lip. Eye small, suborbital spine absent. Lower jaw shorter than upper jaw. Lateral line complete, run straight along mid line of flank. Pectoral fin of male larger than female, tip of pectoral fin pointed in male and rounded in female. Distinguished from all other species of Barbatula from northern Asia by having an upper lip with a marked and deep median indention(vs. slight and shallow) and a nearly scaleless body or scales only on the caudal-fin base(vs. body scaled posterior to the dorsal-fin origin or a fully scaled body).

Yellowish brown in ground color, pale ventrally. Cloudy dark blotches scattered on dorsal side. The blotches spaced denser and slenderer shape than Barbatula toni. Without any marks on lower cheek and abdomen area. 2∼3 transverse bands made up by small dark blotches on dorsal and caudal fins. A dark vertical bar on the base of caudal fin. Inhabit gravel bottoms in upper reaches. Omnivores, feed mainly on larvae of aquatic insects. Spawning season assumed April to May. Nuptial tubercules develop on head side and pectoral fin of male.
