Barbatula-toni_nuda_comparison-illust_word_500.jpg 종개와 대륙종개의 구별; 종개의 무늬가 대륙종개의 무늬보다 굵다.
Difference in pattern between Barbatula toni and Barbatula nuda; patterns of Barbatula toni are bolder than Barbatula nuda.

Order Cypriniformes Family Nemacheilidae(Stone loaches).
종개(Siberian stone loach)
Barbatula toni(Dybowski, 1869). max. length 22 cm TL.
Korean name/jong-gae(종개)
Dorsal spines 3, Dorsal soft rays 7. Anal spines 3, Anal soft rays 5. Vert/40~44. Gill raker/13~14

Distribution; Asia/Streams north of Nam-dae-cheon stream(Gang-reung district) that flows to east coasts of  Korean peninsula, Hokkaido of Japan, Sakhalin, rivers in Siberia, and northeastern China that flow into the northwestern Pacific
General; Body elongated and slender, cylindrical anteriorly, compressed posteriorly. Head with conical shape and slightly depressed. Ventral margin of head straight. Eye small, located at dorso-head top.  Absent in suborbital spines. Mouth placed below snout and with Ω shape when seen from below. Lower jaw shorter than upper jaw. Lips are smooth, tip of upper lip in adult particularly thick. 3 pairs of barbels around the upper lip. Females are generally larger with a rounder abdomen. Pectoral fin of male longer than female, tip of pectoral fin pointed in male and rounded in female. Anal fin placed far behind of dorsal fin. Margin of caudal fin truncated or very slightly emarginated. Scales small and embedded under skin and absent on head. Lateral line complete; run straight along mid flank and curved upward to gill opening and to caudal fin base.

Body brown in ground color; darker dorsally, light ventrally. Cloudy irregular dark blotches scattered on dorsal area, 12~17 mottled blotches along the body side. Dark spots on rays of dorsal and caudal fins look as if 2∼3 bands.

Inhabit gravel and stone covered bottoms in clear water of upper reaches. Sensitive to pollution and low oxygen levels, therefore, its presence in a river can be taken as an indication of good water quality. Feed mainly on aquatic insects, benthic molluscs, worms, fish eggs and fry. Spawning season assumed April to May. Male shows nuptial tubercles on pectoral fin, snout and dorso-body. Regarded by many scientists as being a sub-species of Barbatula barbatula, or possibly the same species.
