분포; 전 세계 해양의 열대, 온대 해역에 분포한다. 북으로는 알류산 열도, 아이스란드, 남으로는 칠레까지 분포하며 극동 아시아 쪽으로는 일본 동남부 태평양 해역에 나타난다.
일반개요; 몸이 육중하고 뚱뚱하다. 주둥이는 옆으로는 넓게 둥글고 앞으로는 짧다. 아가미구멍 6개, 등지느러미는 1개이다. 뒷지느러미는 등지느러미보다 작다. 갈색 내지 회색이다. 체측에 뚜렷하지는 않은 밝은색 띠 하나가 지나간다. 지느러미들의 가장자리는 희다. 살아있을 때 눈은 형광 녹색을 띤다. 아가미구멍은 몸의 밑까지 들어가면서 길다. 깊은 수심에 살지만 수면층까지 나타난다(0~2000m). 야간 다이빙에서 스쿠바 다이버들이 만나보기도 한다. 각종 물고기, 오징어, 게, 새우, 사체, 물개류도 먹는다. 태생이며 한 배에 22~108 마리의 새끼를 낳는다. 사람을 공격한 사실이 있는지는 알려진 바가 없다. 식용으로는 불합격 판정을 받고 있다.

Distribution: Circumglobal in tropical and temperate waters, including Iceland, Aleutian Islands, Chile and eastern Japan.
General: With sixgill, one dorsal fin, and heavy body. Snout short and broad. Dorsal fin without black tip. Brown or grey above, paler below, with a indistinctive light stripe along side. Fins with white edges. Live specimens with fluorescent green eyes. Gill slits are very long. Depth range from 0m to 2000m. A deepwater species, moving to the surface at night to feed. Occasionally encountered by divers at night in moderate depths. Feeds on sharks, rays, bony fishes, squids, crustaceans, carrion, and seals, Ovoviviparous, with 22 to 108 young in a litter. Not known to have attacked people. Poisonous to eat.
