분포; 서북태평양/타이완 남부, 필리핀 북부(주로 바타네스주에서 발견됨).
일반개요; 새끼를 직접 낳는 태생 물고기이다. 태생양메기과에는 26속이 있으며 본종은 Brotulinella 속의 유일 종이다. 최대 6cm(체장)로 작은 물고기이며 3.5cm 크기에서 성어가 된다. 몸은 길고 가늘다. 머리의 높이는 체장의 16%, 뒷지느러미 위치에서 체고는 체장의 16.5%이다. 눈은 약간 큰 편이다. 뺨에 작은 비늘이 수직 열로 5줄이 있다. 위턱의 뒤 끝은 눈을 훨씬 초과한다. 위턱의 위쪽 가장자리는 윗입술의 피부 막이 올라타있다. 위턱의 뒤 끝은 둥글며 끝의 하부 코너 앞쪽에 미약한 혹 모양이 달려 있다. 앞 콧구멍은 아래 쪽으로 낮게 위치하며 뒤 콧구멍은 크다. 아가미 뚜껑의 가시는 뾰족하고 가시의 끝은 아가미 뚜껑과 분리되어 있다. 몸의 비늘은 피부 밑에 묻혀 있다. 뒷지느러미 기점은 몸의 중간 위치 바로 앞에 있다. 가슴지느러미 뒤는 뒷지느러미 기점과 등지느러미기점 사이의 중간에 이른다. 측선은 명확하게 보이지 않는다. 상악의 앞부분에 낱알 모양의 이빨이 4열 있고 그 앞쪽의 1열 이빨은 크다. 맨 앞 쪽 이빨의 길이는 동공 지름의 약 1/2이다. 서골에 동공 지름의 1/2 길이인 긴 송곳니가 1열 있다. 구개골에는 2열의 이빨이 있다. 

수컷은 2쌍의 가짜음경(pseudoclasper)을 가지고 있는데 외측 것은 크고 넓으며 단검처럼 생겼고 넓은 지지대를 가지고 있다. 내측 것은 긴 피부편으로 앞부분이 외측 가짜음경과 연결되어 있고 지지대도 없는 거의 위축된 부속지이다. 진짜 음경은 가짜 음경보다 월등히 길지 않고 휘었으며 기저부가 넓다. 살아있는 상태의 색상은 알려져 있지 않다. 알코올 저장 표본은 옅은 갈색이며 머리와 몸 위쪽 1/3이 옆구리보다 검다. 얕은 수심의 돌 틈 사이에서 살며 주로 너울이 영향을 미치는 지역에서 발견된다. 6m 수심 이내의 얕은 수심에서 은밀하게 단독 생활을 한다.

Distribution; Western Pacific/known from southern Taiwan and northern Philippines, chiefly Batanes Province.
General; A species of viviparous brotula, the only known member of its genus. Small fish, maximum 60 mm SL, maturity reaches at 35 mm SL. Body elongated, slender. Head height about 16% SL, depth at anal about 16.5% SL. Eyes moderately large. Head with scale patch on cheek containing up to 5 verticals rows of small scales. Maxillary ending far behind eye, dorsal margin of maxillary covered by dermal lobe of upper lip, posterior end rounded, with weak knob on posterior ventral part but anterior to rear corner. Anterior nostril positioned low, posterior nostril large. Opercular spine pointed with free tip. Scales on body embed in skin. Anal fin origin just before mid-body. Pectoral fin reaching half way between verticals through anal and dorsal fin origins. Lateral line configuration indistinct. Premaxilla with 4 rows of granular teeth and 1 row of larger teeth anteriorly, anterior-most teeth length up to 1/2 diameter of pupil. Vomer with one row of large fangs up to 1/2 diameter of pupil. Palatine teeth in 2 rows. 

Male with two pairs of pseudoclasper, the outer pseudoclasper large, broad, blade shaped with a broad supporter. Inner pseudoclasper a long fleshy flap anteriorly joined to the outer pseudoclasper, almost reduced to an appendix without supporter. Penis not much longer than pseudoclaspers, curved, broad at base. Live color unknown. Color in alcohol; light brown, head and upper 1/3 of body darker than fanks. Occurs in shallow water between rocks, mainly in surge areas. Cryptic, solitary inhabitant of shallow water in less than 6m depth, found mostly in the surge zone.
