분포; 대서양과 인도•태평양의 열대, 아열대 해역과 강과 호수에 분포한다.
일반개요; 주둥이가 짧고 뭉툭하며 위(아래)에서 볼 때 넓게 곡선이다. 눈이 작다. 위턱니는 삼각형이며 톱니 가장자리 구조이다. 몸집이 크며 두 등지느러미 사이의 융기선(interdorsal ridge)이 없으며 제1등지느러미는 넓은 삼각형이다. 회색 및 회갈색이며 배쪽은 밝다. 각 지느러미들에 검은 첨부가 없으나 어린 것들은 있다. 연안의 바다와 담수에 사는데 특히 만, 하구, 강, 호수의 얕은 수심에 주로 산다. 기수에 머물던 개체는 24 시간에 180km를 강 상류로 이동할 수 있다. 호수에 갇혀 사는 개체들도 있다. 강 상어(river shark)라고도 불리운다. 어린 개체는 바다에서 수백 키로미터 떨어진 강 상류에서도 발견된다. 경골어류, 연골어류, 오징어, 게, 새우, 소라, 성게, 포유동물의 사체, 바다 거북, 음식쓰레기도 먹는다. 사람에게 매우 위험한 종으로 간주된다. 담수에서 공격 사건을 일으킨 기록은 없다. 태생이며 한 배에 13 마리까지 새끼를 낳는다. 10~15년에 어미가 된다. ※ Bull: 황소

Distribution: Widespread in tropical, subtropical seas, rivers and lakes. East & West Atlantic, Indo-West Pacific and Eastern Pacific.
General: A massive shark with a short, broad and blunt snout, small eyes and triangular saw-edged upper teeth. Lack of interdorsal ridge. 1st dorsal fin broad and triangular. No markings on fins, but young individuals with dusky fin tips. A coastal and freshwater shark inhabiting shallow waters especially in bays, estuaries, rivers and lakes. Also known as River Shark and Estuary Whaler. Capable of covering great distances moving between fresh and brackish water at random. Young may be found hundreds of km from the sea. Feeds on bony fishes, sharks, rays, shrimps, crabs, squid, sea snails, sea urchins, mammalian carrion, sea turtles, and occasionally garbage. Dangerous species, attacks in fresh water are rare. Give birth to litters of up to 13 young. Sexual maturity is attained after 10~15 years. Utilized for human consumption.
