분포; 인도•서태평양/동아프리카에서부터(홍해 제외) 라인섬, 뉴칼레도니아, 일본 남부까지 분포.
일반개요; 목덜미에서부터 미병부 끝까지의 사선 윗부분과 꼬리지느러미 전체가 밝은 노랑색이다. 등지느러미는 살아있을 때 노랑색이다. 나이가 많아지면 앞쪽에서부터 노란색 면적이 줄어들면서 파란색이 넓어진다. 체고의 3분의 1에 해당하는 복부는 은백색이다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미에 비늘이 있다. 가슴지느러미 기부에 작은 흑색 반점이 있다. 5~50m 수심의 산호초 지대에서 무리를 지어 생활한다. 동물플랑크톤을 주식하며 난생이다. 중층에 알을 낳는다.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific/East Africa to Line Island(except Red Sea), New Caledonia, Great Barrier Reef, north to southern Japan.
General: Tail fin and peduncle, and body above a diagonal from just anterior origin of dorsal fin to ventral origin of caudal peduncle bright yellow. Yellow area retreat to tail and its base with growth. Dorsal fin yellow when alive, rest fins whitish. The rest of upper 2/3 of body bright blue, lower third silvery white. Scaled dorsal and anal fins. Upper base of pectoral fin with black spot. Around coral reefs of 5~50m depth. Forms large schools, also with other caesionids. Feeds on zooplankton. Oviparous, small pelagic eggs.
