분포; 인도•태평양/한국의 동해 남부와 남해, 일본 남부, 인도양(홍해 포함), 및 태평양의 열대, 아열대 해역에 분포.
일반개요; 몸과 머리는 측편되었고 눈의 지름과 주둥이의 길이가 비슷하다. 주둥이는 약간 둥글다. 가슴지느러미의 기부와 아가미뚜껑 뒤에서부터 배지느러미 사이의 하단 복부에 비늘이 없다. 모비늘들은 작다. 살아있을 때 은색이며 보통 5~9개의 진하지는 아니한 어두운 수직 무늬가 있으며 죽은 개체는 무늬가 사라진다. 등지느러미, 꼬리지느러미, 뒷지느러미에 노르스름한 녹색조가 나타날 수 있다. 1~60m 수심의 연안에서 무리를 지으며 유영생활을 한다. 보통 산호초 주변이나 모래 바닥 쪽에 있다. 갑각류, 연체동물, 작은 물고기를 먹는다. 좋은 식용어이다.

Distribution: Indo-Pacific/southern Korea, southern Japan, western Pacific, Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian Islands.
General: Body and head compressed. Snout length almost equal to eye diameter, snout rounded. Silvery body color, with retrose broad dark bands, bands disappear in spirits. Breast naked ventrally to pelvic-fin origins and a separate naked area at pectoral-fin base. Rear dorsal, anal and tail fins tinted yellowish green. Found in coastal waters adjacent to sandy beaches and often near reefs. Depth range 1~60m. Form schools. Feeds on crustaceans, mollusks and small fishes. Excellent food fish.
