분포; 인도•태평양: 홍해, 동아프리카에서부터 일본 남부까지 동쪽으로는 멕시코와 파나마에 분포.
일반개요; 머리와 몸의 등쪽 바탕색은 연한 청동색이며 배쪽은 은백색이다. 가슴지느러미를 제외한 나머지 지느러미들이 진한 청색이다. 유어와 젊은 성어의 가슴지느러미는 노란색이었다가 다 큰 성어가 되면 회색이 된다. 눈 뒤에서부터 미병부까지, 체고의 3분의 2에 해당하는 윗부분에 작은 흑색점과 청색 반점들이 다수 산재한다. 위턱의 뒤끝은 눈의 중앙에 이르지 못한다. 가슴지느러미는 측선의 변곡점을 초과한다. 모비늘은 다소 검다. 표층에서부터 190m 수심까지 나타나며 암초 주변에서 산다. 물고기, 갑각류를 먹으며 단독 또는 소수의 무리로 다닌다. 대형 성어는 시쿠아테라 독성을 지닐 수 있다.

Distribution: Indo-Pacific/Red Sea and East Africa to French Polinesia, north to southern Japan, south to New Caledonia, east to Mexico and Panama.
General: Head and upper body color brassy, below silvery. Postorbital head and upper two-thirds of body with scattered, very small, black spots and blue blotches. Scutes a little blackish. Median fins bright blue. Pectoral fin of juveniles yellow, young adult yellowish, large adult grey. Pectoral fin long, reaching well beyond juncture of straight and curved portion of lateral line. Posterior end of maxilla not reaching posterior margin of eye. Depth range 0~190m. A coastal and oceanic species, associated with reefs. Solitary or in small groups. Feeds on fishes and crustaceans. Large adults may be ciguatoxic.
