분포; 서태평양: 한국의 제주도 포함 남해, 일본 남부, 동중국해에 분포한다.
일반개요; 몸과 머리는 측편되었고 체고는 낮다. 아가미뚜껑 상단 우측에 2개의 큰 가시가 있고 전새개골(preopercle) 가장자리에 20~47 개의 작은 톱니 가시가 있다. 두 눈 사이가 좁다. 가슴지느러미 위에 경계선이 불분명한 어두운 반점(살아 있을 때는 적색)이 있거나 없을 수도 있다. 80~200m의 비교적 깊은 수심의 모래, 개펄 지역에 산다.

Distribution: West Pacific: southern Korea, southern Japan, East China Sea.
General: Head & body depressed, low body depth. 20~47 small spines around posterior margin of preopercle. 2 spine on upper right side of opercle. Narrow interorbital region with 2 rows of sensory canal pores. Body with indistinct dark blotch (red in color when alive) above pectoral fin, or without. Caudal fin emarginated, with elongated upper most ray. Sandy-muddy bottoms of shelf edges. Depth range 80~200m.
