분포;. 인도-서태평양/인도양의 아프리카 동부 해안과 홍해, 서부 인도에 분포하며 서태평양의, 말레이 반도, 인도네시아, 호주 북부, 남중국해, 일본 남부, 한국 남부에 분포한다. 최근에 통가에서 발견되었다는 보고가 있다(2020년 fishbase.org 데이터)
일반개요; 단 2종 밖에 없는 물멸치류 중에서 다른 한 종인 화이트 살색물멸(Whitefin wolf-herring/Chirocentrus nudus)과 다른 점은 가슴지느러미가 조금 짧고 등지느러미 위 부분과 뒷지느러미 앞 부분에 검은 반점이 있다는 점이다. 살색물멸은 지느러미가 투명하다. 나머지는 두 종의 외형이 똑같다.중대형 급의 은빛 나는 물고기이다. 최대 몸길이 1 m(SL) 이다.  몸은 길고 옆으로 심하게 측편되었으며 배의 중심선에 모비늘이 없다. 입이 크다. 위턱의 앞쪽에 2개의 송곳니가 전방을 향해 뻗어 있고 나머지 부분에는 예리한 이빨이 줄지어 있으며 아래 턱에도 송곳니가 줄지어 있다. 눈은 작은 편이고 눈까풀이 눈 전체를 덮고 있다. 내장에 나선판(螺旋瓣)이 있다(한국 내 한 글에서는 이 정보가 오류라고 주장하고 있으나 해외 문헌에는 나선판이 있다는 글이 많다). 아가미 갈퀴 수는 17-22, 새파 수는 8개이다.

지느러미들에는 가시 기조가 없다. 등지느러미는 1개이며 몸 중심에서 상당히 뒤쪽에 위치한다.  등지느러미의 연조 수는 16-19이며, 기저부는 짧으며 기점은 뒷지느러미 기조의 바로 위에 있다. 등지느러미의 기저부는 뒷지느러미의 기저부보다 짧다. 뒷지느러미의 기점은 등지느러미의 앞쪽 기부 아래에 있다. 뒷지느러미의 연조 수는 30-35개이다. 꼬리지느러미는 안으로 깊게 패였다. 가슴지느러미는 배쪽에 치우쳐있다. 배지느러미는 작고 배 아래쪽에 붙으며 6개 내지 7개 기조로 이루어져 있다. 배지느러미는 가슴지느러미 기부와 뒷지느러미 기점 사이 중심에 있다. 척추골 수는 69-75개이다. 비늘은 작고 둥근비늘이다. 잘 떨어져나가는 성질이다. 측선이 없다. 위장에 유문수(Pyloric caeca)가 없다. 등은 밝은 청색이며 옆구리와 아래는 은색이다. 등지느러미 위쪽과 뒷지느러미 앞 아래 부분에 검은 반점이 있다.  열대와 아열대 해양에 서식하며 주로 연안에서 발견되고 기수에도 나타난다. 식성이 사나운 육식형이다. 물고기를 주로잡아먹으며 갑각류, 오징어, 다른 무척추동물도 먹는다. 상업적으로 어획되며 생선과 냉동어로 판매된다.

Distribution; Indo-Western Pacific/eastern Africa, Red Sea, west coasts of India, Malay peninsula, Indonesia, northern coasts of Australia, South and East China Sea, southern Japan, and southern Korea. Recently reported from Tonga(source; 2020. fishbase.org).
General; Medium to large-sized silvery fishes. The slightly shorter pectoral fin and the black marking of the upper part of the dorsal fin are the only satisfactory characters separating this species from Whitefin wolf-herring(Chirocentrus nudus). Maximum size about 1 m SL. Body elongate and strongly compressed without pelvic scutes. Mouth large. 2 fanglike canines pointing forward in upper jaw, a series of canine teeth in lower jaw. Eyes relatively small, with eyelids completely covering eyes. Intestine with spiral valve. Gill rakers 17-22; branchiostegal rays 8. 

No spinous fin rays. A single dorsal fin set well behind midpoint of body. Dorsal-fin short-based with 16-19 rays, its origin just above anal-fin origin, its base shorter than anal-fin base. Anal fin origin below anterior dorsal fin base; anal fin with 30-35 rays. Caudal fin deeply forked. Pectoral fins set low on body. Pelvic fins small, abdominal, with 6 or 7 rays. Pelvic fins about equidistant between pectoral base and anal origin. Total vertebrae 69-75. Scales small, cycloid and deciduous. lateral line absent. Pyloric caeca absent. Color: back bright blue, flanks silver. With a black marking on  upper part of dorsal fin and on anterior lower part of anal fin, this the only satisfactory characters separating this species from Chirocentrus nudus that lacks black markings.

The Dorab Wolf Herring occurs in tropical and subtropical marine waters and is usually found in inshore waters or estuarine waters. Ravenous carnivores. It feeds on primarily on fishes although crustaceans, squids and other invertebrates are also eaten. They are commercially fished, and marketed fresh or frozen.
