분포; 서태평양/한국의 남해, 일본 중부 이남, 동중국해, 필리핀, 오스트레일리아 동부 해안.
일반개요; 파랑눈매퉁이과의 학명 “Chlorophthalmidae 크롤로프탈미대”의 어원은 그리스어의 클로로스(chloros=green)와 오프탈모스(ophthalmos=eye)의 합성어이다. 눈이 녹색인데서 나온 학명이다. 눈의 내면에 있는 광반사성 판(Tapetum)이 밝은 무지개 빛 녹색이며 빛을 받으면 녹색과 아울러 형광색을 발한다. 한국명 “첨문파랑눈매퉁이”는 눈이 청색인 매퉁이라는 뜻인데 어떤 연유로 녹색을 청색으로 말하고 있는지 필자는 알 수 없다. 그런데 중국과 일본에서도 파랑눈매퉁이과 무리를 한자로 청안어(青眼魚)라 표기하고 있다. 더욱 궁금해진다. 중국과 대만에서는 첨문파랑눈매퉁이를 첨문청안어(尖吻青眼鱼)라 표기한다(출처/fishbase.org; 2022.08). 한국명의 접두사 첨문은 중국명의 “尖吻”과 같은 한자이다. “뾰족한 입”이라는 뜻이다. 한국명은 중국명을 따라 지은 것 같다. 

첨문파랑눈매퉁이의 영명은 Greeneye이지만 다른 영명으로는 Humpback Greeneye(번역을 하자면;곱사등파랑눈매퉁이)라고도 한다. 다 큰 성어는 등이 곱사등 모양이 된다. 몸은 길고 단면은 원통형에 가깝다. 몸 뒤로 가면서 측편되어 있고 머리의 앞 부분은 위아래로 납작하다. 몸의 앞 부분은 주둥이에서부터 등지느러미의 기점까지 가파르게 위로 경사지어 있다. 등지느러미 기점에서 체고가 가장 높으며 뒤로 갈수록 낮아진다. 주둥이는 길고 뾰족하며 길이는 눈 지름보다 길다. 눈은 비례에 맞지 않게 매우 크고 둥글며 머리의 위쪽 측면에 위치한다. 두 눈 사이는 좁다. 입은 큰 편이며 위로 비스듬하게 자리를 잡고 있다. 아래 턱이 위턱 앞으로 돌출되어 있다. 상악의 뒤 끝은 눈의 앞 가장자리를 약간 넘어간다. 양턱에는 작은 원추형 이빨이 있다. 위턱의 이빨을 1열, 아래턱의 이빨은 2열이다. 구개골에 1열의 이빨이 있고 전서골과 혀에는 이빨이 없다. 

몸은 빗비늘과 비슷한 비늘로 덮여있다. 등 꼭대기 면, 뺨, 그리고 아가미뚜껑에도 비늘이 있다. 측선은 곱사등을 따라 약간 휘어진 거의 직선형이다. 등지느러미의 기저부는 짧으며 기점은 배지느러미 기부 앞의 위이며 몸의 중간보다 상당히 앞쪽인 위치에 있다. 작은 기름지느러미가 뒷지느러미 기부의 위쪽에 있다. 가슴지느러미는 체측의 가운데 높이에 있고 뒤 끝은 등지느러미 기저부의 끝은 약간 넘어간다. 배지느러미는 등지느러미 기저부의 중간 아래에 있고 뒤 끝은 항문을 넘어간다. 항문은 배지느러미 기저부에 가깝게 있다. 꼬리지느러미는 안으로 깊게 갈라져 있다.   

몸은 황갈색 내지 회색을 띠며 배쪽으로는 연한 색이며 복부는 은백색이다. 몸 측면 중간 높이에 네댓 개의 타원형 어두운 갈색 반점이 있고 등에도 몇 개의 희미한 안장무늬가 있다. 살아있을 때는 이 무늬가 진한 것으로 짐작된다. 항문은 검정 색이며 둘레에 흑회색 부분이 있다. 아가미뚜껑에도 검은 반문이 있다. 

각 지느러미들의 바탕색은 연한 노란색이며 등지느러미의 가장자리는 넓은 폭으로 어두운 회색이며 아래 기저부는 좁은 폭으로 어두운 회색 띠가 있다. 배지느러미의 내측 변두리가 어두운 회색이다. 꼬리지느러미는 어두운 회색을 띤다. 수심 260-950m의 깊은 대륙붕 사면에 산다. 주로 작은 물고기와 갑각류를 먹는다.

Distribution; West Pacific/south sea of Korea, south of central Japan, East China Sea, Philippines, eastern Australia.
General; The scientific family name “Chlorophthalmidae” is derived from the Greek words chloros=green and ophthalmos=eye. Its scientific name comes from its green eyes. The light reflecting plate(Tapetum) on the inner surface of the eye is bright iridescent green, and when it receives light, it emits fluorescent color along with green. The Korean name of this fish(尖吻파랑눈매퉁이) means it has blue eyes, but I do not know why the green is described as blue. What's more questionable is that in China and Japan, the Family Chlorophthalmidae family is also written in Chinese character as “青眼魚(Blue eye fishes)”. In China(and Taiwan), the species name of Chlorophthalmus acutifrons is written in Chinese characters as 尖吻青眼鱼(Cheom-mun blue eye fish), and the Korean name is written as 첨문파랑눈매퉁이(Cheom-mun Blue Eyed Mae-tung-i). The prefix “尖吻(Cheom-mun)” means "pointed mouth". Both names are semantically identical words. The Korean name seems to have been derived from the Chinese name.

The English name is also known as Humpback Greeneye. Adult fish have a humpback-shaped back. The body is elongated and sub-cylindrical, slightly compressed posteriorly. Anterior part of head depressed. The dorsal profile of anterior body steeply rising upwards from behind the head to starting point of the dorsal fin. The body depth at the origin of dorsal fin is highest and tapering backward. The head length moderate and slightly compressed laterally. Snout long and pointed. Snout lenght longer than eye diameter. The eyes are very large and round, positioned at upper side of head. Space between eyes narrow. Mouth rather moderate in size and oblique. The lower jaw is protruded ahead of upper jaw. Posterior end of maxillary reaches slightly beyond the anterior margin of eye. Jaws with small, conical teeth, upper jaw with single row of teeth and 2 rows on lower jaw. Palatine bone with single row of teeth, no teeth on vomer and the tongue. 

The body is covered with comb-like scales, with scales on uppermost dorsal area of the body, the cheeks and the operculum. Lateral line straight with very slight curving along the hump. Dorsal fin base short and its’ origin at front and above the pelvic fin and before middle of body. Adipose fin is small and located above the base of the anal fin. Pectoral fin located in the mid-level of body side. The end of pectoral fin reaches slightly beyond the posterior end of dorsal fin base. Pelvic fin origin at below middle of dorsal fin base and posterior end surpass the anus. Anus positioned close to pelvic fin base. Caudal fin forked. 

The body is yellowish brown to gray, ventrally light colored and abdomen is silvery white. Four or five oval dark brown blotches at mid-height of body side and a few faint saddle patterns on dorsal side. It is presumed that this patterns is distinct when alive. The anus is black surrounded by dark grey. There are also dark blotch on the gill cover. The ground color of each fin is light yellow. A broad dark grey margin and a narrow dark grey basal band on dorsal fin, the pelvic fin with inner dark grey margin. Caudal fin dark grey. It lives on the slopes of the deep continental shelf at a depth of 260-950 m. It feeds mainly on small fish and crustaceans.
