Benthopelagic fish. Found in Northwest Pacific Ocean with a water depth of 207-410 meters. The body is slender and flat on the sides, body depth highest at the origin of dorsal fin and rapidly tapering posteriorly. The dorsal edge of head is convex and snout edge slightly concave. The diameter of the eye is shorter than the length of the head behind the eye. Teeth are small. Barbel shorter than 1/2 of eye diameter. The anus is closer to anal fin origin than to base of the pelvic fin. The light organ located at abdomen between the pelvic fins. Anterior end of light organ extending beyond origin of pelvic fin. Body scale with hexagonal spines in nearly parallel 6-24 rows. Spines on anterodorsal snout are star-shaped and scales absent or present in lateral side of snout. Ventral surface of head without scales. The origin of lateral line is on the upper part of the gill cap that located at the high position of the body. The first spine of the dorsal fin is very small, and the second spine is long and sharp like a sword. The origin of the second dorsal fin is behind the origin of the anal fin. Anal fin much more developed than the second dorsal fin. The pelvic fin base located just below the pectoral fin origin and surpassing anal fin origin when depressed. The body is dark grey dorsally and the belly is blue-black. Small dark spot just above pectoral fin in males(none in females).
