분포; Asia/중국의 북부 황허나 양쯔강 수계에 분포하며 한국은 한강하류에서 한번 발견된 사실이 있었을 뿐이며 멸종 종으로 추정됨.
일반개요;
※한국 내 자료에서 케톱치의 학명이 “Coreius cetopsis(Kner,1867)”라는 자료(예/두산백과)와 “Coreius heterodon(bleeker, 1864)”라는 두 가지가 검색되고 있어서 혼란이 일어난다. Fishbase와 위키피디아에 의하면 Coreius cetopsis는 서로 동종이명도 아니고 다른 종이며 Coreius cetopsis는 중국에만 분포하고 Coreius heterodon는 중국과 한국에 분포하는 것으로 기술되어 있다. 국내 자료에서는 C. cetopsis 학명의 케톱치이든, C. heterodon 학명의 케톱치이든 한국과 중국에 분포한다고 설명되어 있다. 케톱치라는 한국명은 Coreius cetopsis의 종소명인 “cetopsis”에서 나온 것 같다. 그러나 이 물고기의 종명이 “Coreius heterodon”으로 바뀌어버렸다고 볼 수 있으며 한국명 “케톱치”는 이미 작명이 끝난 이름임으로 고정되어버린 것이다. 필자는 국내 자료에 Coreius heterodon를 채택한 것들이 더 많음으로 이에 따랐다.

몸은 길다. 앞쪽 몸은 비교적 통통하고 뒤쪽은 옆으로 납작하다. 머리는 매우 작고 위아래로 납작하다. 눈은 아주 작고 머리 위쪽 앞부분에 있고, 콧구멍은 눈보다 크다. 수염은 매우 길어서 전새개골에 닿거나 더 지나간다. 두 눈 사이 중앙부는 볼록하다. 배지느러미의 기점은 등지느러미 기점의 거의 바로 아래에 있다. 측선은 완전하며 직선이다. 전장 약 25cm. 머리는 두꺼운 비늘로 덮여있고 복부와 가슴에도 비늘이 덮여있다. 등지느러미, 배지느러미, 꼬리지느러미 기부에도 비늘이 있다. 꼬리지느러미는 깊게 패어 있다. 몸 빛깔은 전체적으로 연한 회황색인 것들이 많으며 등쪽이 흑갈색이고 배쪽은 연한 색인 것도 있다. 가슴지느러미, 배지느러미, 뒷지느러미는 연한 노란색이고 등지느러미와 꼬리지느러미는 흐린 검은색이다. 비교적 큰 강에 서식한다. 생태나 생활사에 관해서는 알려진 것이 거의 없다. 1913년 인천 부근의 하천에서 2마리가 채집되었는데, 그 이후 출현 기록이 없어 절멸된 것으로 보인다.

코레이우스 속에는 다음 4종이 알려져 있고 모두 중국 고유종 담수어로 정의되어 있다.

Distribution; Asia/China, and in Korea, only 2 specimens collected from lower reach of Han River in 1913, since then never found.
General;
※ There is some confusion in Korea about the scientific name of “Large barbell”. Some literatures state “Coreius cetopsis(Kner,1867)” as its scientific name, the others state “Coreius heterodon(bleeker, 1864)”, the latter is superior in user numbers.

Body elongated. Anterior body relatively thick and compressed posteriorly. Head small and compressed. Eye very small, located at anterior, upper head. Nostrils larger than eye. Barbels fairly long, reach or pass the preopercula. The center between eyes convex. Origin of Pelvic fin located almost direct below of dorsal fin origin. Lateral line complete and straight. Head covered with thick scales, chest and abdomen also with scales. With scales on base areas of dorsal, pelvic and caudal fins. Caudal fin deeply emarginated. Gray brown dorsally, pale ventrally. Pectoral, pelvic, anal fins with light yellowish color, dorsal and caudal fins with light black color. Inhabits relatively large rivers. Ecology and life style unknown. In Korea, only 2 specimens collected in 1913, since then never found, probably extinct species in Korea.

This genus is endemic to freshwater habitats in China. It currently contains four recognized species. As follow;
