Lateral view of Korean splendid dace(Coreoleuciscus splendidus)

Coreoleuciscus_aeruginos_splendidus_difference.jpg A는 참쉬리, B는 쉬리의 등지느러미와 꼬리지느러미이다. 참쉬리와 쉬리는 오랫동안 같은 종으로 알려져 있다가 서로 다른 종으로 판명되었다. 등지느러미와 꼬리지느러미의 문양에서 분명한 차이가 식별되는데 그래도 자세히 살펴보아야 확인할 수 있다. 나머지 다른 지느러미들의 문양도 다르기는 한데 차이를 말하기가 쉽지 않은 정도이다. 그림 저자/김인영;

일반개요;
“shinner”는 빛을 반사하는 물체의 뜻이며 “splendid”는 화려하다는 뜻이며 “dace”는 잉어과의 여러 작은 물고기들을 통칭할 때 쓰이는 이름이며 그 외에 ‘사랑해 주는 사람/A dace is a loving and caring person.” 뜻이 있다(출처/urbandictionary.com/).

Distribution; Asia/almost all streams flow to west and south coasts of Korean peninsula, including some streams flow to East coast, and streams in Geo-je and Nam-hae islands.
General; Only 2 speciemens included in genus Coreoleuciscus worldwide and they are endemic to Korea. Korea endemic freshwater fish famous with splendid color and body shape. With a long, slender body, cylindrical and compressed peduncle. With long head and pointed snout tip. Mouth small, with horse shoe shape in ventral view, located below snout tip. Absent in barbel. Eyes are small, placed anterior mid head and dorso-head. Lower jaw shorter than upper jaw. Lateral line complete and straight. Scales relatively large.

Margin of dorsal fin rounded, origin of dorsal fin located slightly ahead of pelvic fin origin. Anal fin relatively small with rounded margin. Anal fin placed behind dorsal fin and with rounded margin. Pectoral fin narrow and elongated, placed close to opercula. Caudal fin deeply caved in.

Its head is greyish-brown in colour, while its back is darker. A black stripe from snout tip through eye and to posterior margin of opercula. A broad yellow stripe along the lateral line, and additional lateral stripes in red orange, violet and blackish blue above it. Silvery white below lateral line. 2 oblique arrangements consisted with short and narrow black bars on each caudal fin lobes, also similar patterns also on all the rest fins.

Inhabits pebble bottoms in mid and upper reaches where water flow fast. Swimming fast just above the bottom in small numbered schools. Feed on aquatic insects and small animals. It typically spawns between the beginning of April and the middle of June. Attach eggs on to under stones of fist size. It is often used for decorative purposes; feeding it sources of carotenoids, specifically spirulina or paprika, has been observed to improve the colour definition of its skin and fins.

A Korean film had made this fish famous.
The 1999 South Korean action film Shiri(Shui-ri) was named after C. splendidus. Shiri was the first Hollywood-style big-budget blockbuster to be produced in the "new" Korean film industry. The fish appears prominently in tanks in the offices of the main characters, and one of the film's primary antagonists has a monologue which discusses the fish and the effect that the division of Korea has had on it.
