분포; 전세계 해양의 열대와 아열대 해역에 분포.
일반개요; 한국의 남해안에 나타남. 몸과 머리는 측편되었다. 만새기는 등과 배의 외곽선이 거의 직선인데 반하여 줄만새기는 곡선이다. 만새기의 체고는 배지느러미 기점에서 가장 높은데 반하여 줄만새기는 배지느러미 뒷쪽에서 체고가 가장 높다. 수컷은 살아있을 때 등쪽은 화려한 녹청색, 측면은 금빛이 도는 광채색이며 등지느러미와 몸체에 진한 청색 내지 어두운 남색 점들이 흩어져 있다. 죽으면 녹색을 띤 회색으로 변한다. 암컷은 수컷만큼 화려하지 않으며 등쪽은 어두운 청색, 체측은 은백색을 띤다.
나이가 들수록 머리가 튀어나오면서 앞면이 직선형이 되며 노성어 수컷이 뚜렷하게 이마가 돌출한다. 외양성이지만 연안에도 나타난다. 대개의 경우 무리로 다닌다. 표층성이다. 물고기와 오징어를 잡아먹는다. 알은 중층에 산란한다. 고급 식용어이다. 만새기와 혼동될 때가 많다.
※여러 자료에서 줄만새기의 색상 설명은 변질된 죽은 개체와 불분명하게 촬영된 수중사진 등에 근거하고 있어서 난맥상을 보인다. 그림의 색상은 종합적으로 판단해 칠한 것이다.

Coryphaena equiselis(Linnaeus, 1758). 127cm(TL)
Distribution: Worldwide in tropical and subtropical, including southern Korea.
General: Head and body compressed. Dorsal and ventral contours of body convex(C. hippurus nearly straight). Body deepest behind pelvic fin(C. hippurus deepest at origin of pelvic fin). Color of adult male in life brilliant metallic blue-green dorsally, side silvery with golden sheen, dorsal fin dark, brilliant blue spots scattered over the body and on dorsal fin. Fading to grey with green tinge upon death. Female blue dorsally and silvery ventrally, less beautiful than male. Head profile of large adults becomes vertical with the development of bony crest, but more in males. Primarily an epipelagic species, may enter coastal waters. Usually forms schools. Feed on small fishes and squids. Eggs and larvae are pelagic. Excellent food fish.
