분포; 전세계 해양의 열대와 온대 해역에 분포한다. 한국의 동해와 남해에서 발견된다.
일반개요; 몸과 머리는 측편되었고 등과 배의 가장자리는 거의 직선에 가깝다. 체고는 배지느러미 기점에서 가장 높다. 등지느러미는 1개이며 거의 눈 위에서부터 꼬리지느러미에 가깝게 연장되어 있다. 뒷지느러미도 꼬리지느러미와 가깝게 연장 되었다. 꼬리지느러미 기조 수는 대개 18개이다. 수컷은 체측이 금빛이며 등쪽은 청녹색이다. 배쪽은 흰부분과 노르스름한 부분이 교차한다. 몸 전체에 화려한 청색 점들이 산재한다. 수컷은 나이가 먹을수록 이마(bony crest)가 튀어나온다. 암컷은 수컷처럼 화려하지 않으며 성장하면서 이마가 확장되기는 하지만 수컷처럼 튀어나오지는 않는다. 유어기에는 몸에 여러 개의 수직 무늬들이 있다. 바다의 표층이나 중층을 무리지어 유영하며 가까운 연안에도 나타난다. 물고기, 동물플랑크톤, 갑각류, 오징어 등 다양한 먹이를 먹는다. 다른 이름으로 마히마히(Mahimahi) 또는 도라도(Dorado)로 불린다. 고급 식용어이다.

Distribution: Worldwide in tropical to temperate seas. Eastern to southern Korea.
General: Head and body compressed. Dorsal and ventral contours of body nearly straight. Body deepest at origin of pelvic fin. Single dorsal fin. Dorsal and anal fins extending almost caudal fin. Mature males posses a prominent bony crest in front of the head. Male’s color is striking with golden hues on the sides, metallic blue and greens on the back and sides, with white and yellow on the underparts. Female less colorful and lacks a distinct hump on the forehead. Small specimens have pronounced vertical bars on the side of body. Found in open waters and also near the coast. Form schools. Feeds on almost all forms of fish and zooplankton, crustaceans and squids. Spawns in open sea. Food fish of high value.
