Korean name/han-duk-jung-gae(한둑중개)

Cottus-poecilopus_Cottus-hangiongensis_pattern.jpg 둑중개는 몸통의 무늬(국화꽃 무늬?) The pattern on the body(chrysanthemum flower pattern?) of the Cottus poecilopus does not reach the bottom of the belly, but in case of the Cottus hangiongensis, the pattern is extended to the bottom of the belly. Distribution; Asia/Primorski Krai in Russia to eastern provinces of Korean Peninsula. Also from Hokkaido, Japan. Reported from China.
General; The head is large and slightly depressed. The body almost cylindrical and the tail stalk compressed. The snout short and the mouth large and flat. Both jaws almost equal in length, and the back of the upper jaw reaches below the center of the pupil. Both jaws, vomer(bone at the front of the skull) with teeth, and the palatine bone without teeth. The spine in preopercle very small and point upwards. The eyes are small and skewed toward the back of the head. The dorsal fin is divided into two, and the margin of the caudal fin is slightly rounded. Absent in scales, but the lateral line is complete.

The body color is grayish brown to yellowish brown, and the belly part is light yellow. On the body side, 5 broad dark brown blotches and bright white, large circular patterns are scattered. The rays of dorsal, pectoral and caudal fin have dark dots arranged in a regular order. The caudal fin is yellow. The anal fin with black dots on a white background.

Tuman river sculpin(Cottus hangiongensis) found on gravel bottoms of middle and lower reaches of streams. Carnivorous and feed on aquatic insects. Spawn in March to June, lays eggs under stones at the edge of streams with a depth of about 20 to 40 cm. The male protects the eggs. While taking care of the eggs, the male's body turns black. After hatching, it goes down to the sea, and after about 1 month of floating life, it returns to the river. In Korea, on May 31, 2012, it was designated as endangered wildlife class 2 and protected.

[Difference between Cottus hangiongensis and Cottus poecilopus]. Tuman river sculpin(Cottus hangiongensis) and Alpine bullhead(Cottus poecilopus) are very similar in form and difficult to distinguish. Tuman river sculpin occurs in below the middle stream of the river, and anadromous. The Alpine bullhead occurs in uppermost stream, and no information whether this fish also anadromous or not. Presumably lifetime in freshwater. Tuman river sculpin has an egg size of about 2mm and Alpine bullhead about 3mm. The ratio of male's anal fin length to body length is about 20% in Tuman river sculpin and around 25% in Alpine bullhead. The snout length is a little shorter in Tuman river sculpin compared to Alpine bullhead and the height of the tail stalk is higher in the Tuman river sculpin. Two species can be distinguished by the presence or absence of a chrysanthemum flower pattern on the lower body side.
