Cottus poecilopus(Heckel, 1837). 15.0 cm TL
Korean name/duk-jung-gae(둑중개)
D/spine 8~9, soft ray 17~21, A/soft ray 13~17. P1/12~13. Vertbae/34~38. Gr/8~9

Cottus-poecilopus_Cottus-hangiongensis_pattern.jpg둑중개는 몸통의 무늬(국화꽃 무늬?) The pattern on the body(chrysanthemum flower pattern?) of the Cottus poecilopus does not reach the bottom of the belly, but in case of the Cottus hangiongensis, the pattern is extended to the bottom of the belly.

Distribution; Asia and Europe/rivers in north of central Korean peninsula, China, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Poland, Norway, Czech, Slovakia, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany.
General; The body almost cylindrical and slightly compressed, peduncle compressed. Head large and slightly depressed. Mouth is at the end of the snout, large and depressed. The lips are thick. Snout is short and not exceed half the length of the head. The length of both jaws almost same. The eyes are skewed upward and forward of the head. No scales on the body. Lateral line complete. The posterior end of upper jaw reaches below the center of the eye. There are dense teeth on both jaws. The vomer has teeth and the palatine has no teeth. The spine of preopercle is 1, very short, small, and directed upward and backward. The length of the innermost soft ray of the pelvic fin is very short, not more than half of the longest soft ray. Male's pelvic fin is remarkably larger and longer than female.

Body color is yellowish brown to grayish brown and becomes lighter as it goes toward the abdomen. On the side of the body, there are 5 or 6 wide black brown vertical blotches, and white spots are scattered all over the body. The back edges of dorsal fin yellow, caudal fin yellow in ground color. The dorsal, pectoral, and caudal fins with dark spots that arranged at regular intervals on each rays. Anal fin of male with rows of round white spots on yellow background.

As a cold-water fish, inhabit uppermost streams of rivers where the water is clear and the water temperature does not rise above 20℃ even in summer. Occurs in large rock and gravel bottoms where water flow rapidly. Carnivorous, feed on aquatic insects and crustaceans. The spawning period is from February to May, and the eggs are attached under the stone and the male protects them until hatch.

[Difference between Cottus hangiongensis and Cottus poecilopus]. Tuman river sculpin(Cottus hangiongensis) and Alpine bullhead(Cottus poecilopus) are very similar in form and difficult to distinguish. Tuman river sculpin occurs in below the middle stream of the river, and anadromous. The Alpine bullhead occurs in uppermost stream, and no information whether this fish also anadromous or not. Presumably lifetime in freshwater. Tuman river sculpin has an egg size of about 2mm and Alpine bullhead about 3mm. The ratio of male's anal fin length to body length is about 20% in Tuman river sculpin and around 25% in Alpine bullhead. The snout length is a little shorter in Tuman river sculpin compared to Alpine bullhead and the height of the tail stalk is higher in the Tuman river sculpin. Two species can be distinguished by the presence or absence of a chrysanthemum flower pattern on the lower body side.
