All about the Carps, Myths and Facts

All about the Carps, Myths and Facts”에 들어가 긴 여행을 해 보면 된다.

Korean name/ing-eo(잉어)

2 basic body shapes of common carp/The body of native forms and improved strains may vary from elongated to deep oval. There are two basic forms of common carp: Cyprinus carpio morpha hungaricus and C. carpio morpha acuminatus. The first has an elongated torpedo-like body, while the body of the second is short and stocky, with a high shoulder. These basic forms are presented by Balon(Eugene K. Balon.1930~2013) in 1995 as typical wild common carp and a feral form from the Danube delta.

History

Species(종)란 말은 나와 있지 않다.

The varieties of common carp

Cyprinus_carpio_art_Linear-carp_path500.jpg 줄비늘 잉어 그림. Illustration of linear carp. Authors/Innes, William T.(William Thornton), 1874-1969. Internet Archive Book Images

최대 1.2m(50lb) 까지 큰다.

Mirror carp in case of scales imbedded only dorsal edge of the body in a single line. This type of scale distribution is generally attributed to Leather Carp. Author/Tim Creque from South Lebanon, OH, USA

Koi(Nishikigoi/錦鯉/금리)

Koi_Stan_Christopher_2pictures.jpg Left/주택 연못의 비단잉어. Photo of six different types of Koi. This photograph depicts six koi(plus one goldfish) of a collection of ten living in a private outdoor ornamental freshwater pond in San Jose, California. Author/Stan Shebs

Order Cypriniformes Family Cyprinidae(Minnows or carps) Subfamily Cyprinae
Common carp
Cyprinus carpio(Linnaeus, 1758). 120 cm TL. common length 31cm TL max. weight: 40.1 kg. max. age: 38 years
Korean name/ing-eo(잉어)
Japanese name/koi
Dorsal spines 3, Dorsal soft rays 19-21, Anal spines 3, Anal soft rays 6. Caudal fin/soft rays rays 17-19. LL/36~38. vert/37-39.

Distribution; Europe to Asia/original distribution localities were Black, Caspian and Aral Sea basins. Propagated westerly to Danube River, Greece and Rome, easterly to Siberia, China, Korean peninsula and Japan.
General; Body elongated, compressed laterally, head conical in shape, snout rounded, mouth placed under snout. With 2 pairs of barbels, barbels of anterior pair are thick and long with length of equal to or slightly longer than eye diameter, barbels of posterior pair are short and thin. Scales large and thick, scales embedded like roof tiles. Dorsal fin with 15-20½ branched rays. Last simple anal ray bony and serrated posteriorly; caudal fin deeply emarginated. Body color generally grey, bronze or greenish brown, very variable in form, proportions, squamation, development of fins. Wild common carp are typically slimmer than domesticated forms, with body length about four times body height, red flesh, and a forward-protruding mouth.

Adults inhabit warm, deep, slow-flowing and still waters such as lowland rivers and large, well vegetated lakes. As schooling fish, they prefer to be in groups of five or more. Hardy and tolerant of a wide variety of conditions, they easily survive winter in a frozen-over pond, as long as some free water remains below the ice. Carp are able to tolerate water with very low oxygen levels, by gulping air at the surface, but generally favor large water bodies with slow flowing or standing water and soft bottom sediments. Omnivorous. Both adults and juveniles feed on a variety of benthic organisms and plant material. Adults often undertake considerable spawning migration to suitable backwaters and flooded meadows. Larvae survive only in very warm water among shallow submerged vegetation. River regulation and hybridization with domesticated stocks, East Asian congeners and their hybrids have caused continuous decline of wild populations.

Pictures of wild common carps→ Go to the Korean language section.

A polytypic plastic species with a marked tendency to produce `varieties' and `races' in response to selective breeding and environmental influences. Carp is polygamous. Individual females spawn with a few males in dense vegetation. Under tropical conditions carp breeds throughout the year. It is a seasonal spawner in temperate waters. Korean population spawn in May to June. Females are known to lay more than a million eggs in a season; breeds at a temperature range of 15° C to 20°C; eggs hatch in 4 days. Obligatory plant spawners. The sticky eggs are attached to water plants or other submerged objects.

History
The common carp has its origins in the Black, Aral and Caspian Sea basins. From there the species spread east into Siberia and China, and west into the Danube. The wild forms of carp had already reached the delta of the Rhine in the 12th century, probably with some human help. Early common carp was torpedo-shaped and golden-yellow in colour. Later, common carp has been introduced to every part of the world except the poles, but are also regarded as a pest in several regions due to their ability to out-compete native fish stocks, common carp in America is purely a product of human activity.

The Romans were the first Europeans to farm carp, a practice that probably developed earlier and separately in China and Japan. Carp are used as food in many areas. Although this fish was initially kept as an exploited captive, it was later maintained in large, specially built ponds by the Romans in south-central Europe(verified by the discovery of common carp remains in excavated settlements in the Danube delta area about 2000 years ago). The aquaculture systems soon included spawning and growing ponds. In Europe, domestication of carp as food fish was spread by monks between the 13th and 16th centuries.

Variants that have arisen with domestication include Koi carp(錦鯉(nishikigoi) in Japanese, is a domesticated ornamental variety that originated in the Niigata region of Japan in the 1820s, some states its parent species are likely the East Asian carp, possibly Cyprinus rubrofuscus (Amur carp), but need professional confirmation.

2 basic body shapes of common carp. Images→find in the Korean language section
The body of native forms and improved strains may vary from elongated to deep oval.

1. Mirror Carp
Mirror carp are a type of fish, commonly found in Europe. The name "mirror carp" originates from their scales' resemblance to mirrors. The difference between mirror and its wild ancestor, the common carp, is both genetic and visual - biologically they are similar. The mirror carp was the first mutation of common carp. Common carp have an even, regular scale pattern, whereas mirrors have irregular and patchy scaling, making many fish unique and possible to identify individual fish by sight, leading to most carp in the UK over 40 lb being nicknamed. Lack of scales is widely believed to have been bred in by monks to make the fish easier to prepare for the table.

2. Linear Carp
Linear Carp have a set of mirror scales which run in a line on the side of the fish along the lateral line and it has no scales anywhere else. Relatively rare.

3. Leather Carp
Leather carp are permitted a few large and thick scales either right below the dorsal fin along the dorsal line or the wrist of the tail. Has long history of domestication in Germany. Leather carp also have reduced numbers of red blood cells, slowing growth rates, which makes larger leather carp extremely sought after and rare.

4. Israeli carp
There has been some confusion regarding the status of the “Israeli carp”. The Israeli carp most closely resembles the wild mirror carp in having the greatly enlarged, scattered, mirrorlike scales, but the Israeli carp has a distinctly different body shape, being much deeper bodied and thicker across the back than the wild mirror carp. The predorsal area of the Israeli carp is strongly arched and the occipital region is noticeably concave. Some biologists state that Israeli carp originally crossed cultured carp variations from Yugoslavia and the Netherlands. But others state that Israeli carp is simply mirror carp domesticated in Israel.

5. Koi

Etymology/The word "koi" comes from Japanese, simply meaning "carp". It includes both the dull grey fish and the brightly colored varieties. What are known as koi in English are referred to more specifically as nishikigoi in Japan(meaning "brocaded carp"). In Japanese, koi is a homophone for another word that means "affection" or "love", so koi are symbols of love and friendship in Japan.

History/Koi(鯉) or more specifically nishikigoi(錦鯉, literally "brocaded carp" 양단으로 만든), are colored varieties of Amur carp(Cyprinus rubrofuscus) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens. Koi is an informal group of the colored variants of C. carpio. Several varieties are recognized by the Japanese.

Natural color mutations of these carp would have occurred across all populations. Carp were first bred for color mutations in China more than a thousand years ago, where selective breeding of the Prussian carp(Carassius gibelio) led to the development of the goldfish.

The Amur carp(Cyprinus rubrofuscus), a member of the cyprinid family species complex native to East Asia, was aquacultured as a food fish at least as long ago as the fifth century BC in China, and Jin Dynasty(fourth century AD) texts mentioned carp with various colors. The Amur carp was previously recognized as a subspecies of the common carp(as C. c. haematopterus), but recent authorities treat it as a separate species under the name C. rubrofuscus.

Amur carp were first bred for color in Japan in the 1820s, initially in the town of Ojiya in the Niigata Prefecture on the northeastern coast of Honshu island. The outside world was unaware of the development of color variations in Japanese koi until 1914, when the Niigata koi were exhibited at an annual exposition in Tokyo. From that time, interest in koi spread throughout Japan. From this original handful of koi, all other Nishikigoi varieties were bred, with the exception of the Ogon variety(single-colored, metallic koi), which was developed relatively recently.

The hobby of keeping koi eventually spread worldwide. They are now sold in many pet aquarium shops, with higher-quality fish available from specialist dealers. The collection of koi throughout the years has become quite the social hobby for many who have ponds. It is also common for hobbyists who are passionate about their koi to join a club specifically for their koi and ponds. Members tend to share their knowledge of the fish with others and even help each other out when they are in need of help with their koi.

Taxonomy/In the past, koi were commonly believed to have been bred from the common carp(Cyprinus carpio). Extensive hybridization between different populations, coupled with widespread translocations, have muddled the historical zoogeography of the common carp and its relatives. Traditionally, Amur carp(C. rubrofuscus) were considered a subspecies of the common carp, often under the scientific name C. carpio haematopterus. However, they differ in meristics from the common carp of Europe and Western Asia, leading recent authorities to recognize them as a separate species, C. rubrofuscus(C. c. haematopterus being a junior synonym; 후행이명).

Although one study of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in koi was unable to find a clear genetic structure matching the geographic populations(possibly because of translocation of carp from separate regions), others based on mtDNA, microsatellite DNA and genomic DNA found a clear separation between the European/West Asian population and the East Asian population, with koi belonging in the latter. Consequently, recent authorities have suggested that the ancestral species of the koi is C. rubrofuscus (syn. C. c. haematopterus) or at least an East Asian carp species instead of C. carpio. Regardless, a taxonomic review of Cyprinus carp from eastern and southeastern Asia may be necessary, as the genetic variations do not fully match the currently recognized species pattern, with one study of mtDNA suggesting that koi are close to the Southeast Asian carp, but not necessarily the Chinese.

Differences from goldfish/Goldfish(金魚) were developed in China more than a thousand years ago by selectively breeding Prussian carp for color mutations. By the Song dynasty(960–1279), yellow, orange, white, and red-and-white colorations had been developed. Goldfish(Carassius auratus) and Prussian carp(Carassius gibelio) are now considered different species. Goldfish were introduced to Japan in the 16th century and to Europe in the 17th century. Koi, though, were developed from common carp in Japan in the 1820s. Koi are domesticated common carp(Cyprinus carpio) that are selected or culled for color; they are not a different species, but a subspecies, and will revert to the original coloration within a few generations if allowed to breed freely.

The length of a koi can average up to about 3.28 feet. On average they also grow about 2 centimeters per month. On the other hand, goldfish may only grow to be around a foot. In general, goldfish tend to be smaller than koi, and have a greater variety of body shapes and fin and tail configurations. Koi varieties tend to have a common body shape, but have a greater variety of coloration and color patterns. They also have prominent barbels on the lip. Some goldfish varieties, such as the common goldfish, comet goldfish, and shubunkin, have body shapes and coloration that are similar to koi, and can be difficult to tell apart from koi when immature. Goldfish and koi can interbreed; however, as they were developed from different species of carp, their offspring are sterile.
