Distribution; A variation of common carp introduced to Korea from Israel
General; “Israeli carp” is the name born from Korea, not international name. Its other Korean name is hyang-eo(향어) which means “fragrant fish.” This fish introduced to Korea in 1973 from Israel, some Korean literatures state this fish is the “mirror carp” and some others state “leather carp” domesticated in Europe. These fishes are variations of common carp(Cyprinus carpio). Common carp have an even, regular scale pattern, whereas mirrors have large and thick irregular and patchy scaling and Leather carps have large and thick scales distributed along the lower dorsal fin, but lack scales on the rest of the body. Exact original specimen of Israeli Carp in muddling.

Israeli carp prefers optimum temperature of 25° C, max age 40 years. Spawn in May to June. Demersal and schooling fish. They inhabit warm, deep, slow-flowing, and still waters such as lowland rivers and vegetated lakes. They grow faster than common carp by twice or twice and half growth rate. Have a strong appetite, feeding on a variety of benthic organisms and plant material. The flesh has a firm, chewy texture, with no fine bones or earthy musty odor. Thus, leather carp has become popular as a raw flesh or as a hot chowder food.

Korea was impoverished country until 1970s. Korean government imported about 1,000 fries of Israeli carp from Israel for farming target in 1973, the purpose of this government action was to improve malnutrition of the people. Israeli carp farming flowered in 1980~1990s, and along with, the pay fishing ponds flourished. Israeli carp farming begun to decrease from 1997, due to new policy of prohibiting cultivation of fish in inclosing net that considered degenerating the water quality. Presently, supply of farmed Israeli carp almost none, only minor population found in natural lakes, these rare specimens are later generations of released fishes.

Above 2 pictures are not “Israeli carp”(named by Korean fishery industries) but Mirror carps. Photograph that distinctly confirmed as of Israeli carp is not found in Korean literatures, they utilize mirror carps’ images under Creative Commons licenses. Practically, the exterior morphology of “Israeli carp” impossible to distinguish from “mirror carps”, and in some case from leather carps. Left picture/Author; George Chernilevsky.
