Distribution; Northwest Pacific/South Sea and Jeju Island in South Korea, south of the Tsugaru Strait(the strait between Hokkaido and Honshu) in Japan, and in Taiwanese waters in the East China Sea.
General; When threatened by predators, it soars into the air above the surface and glides away. Body elongated, slightly compressed laterally. Dorsal and ventral margins are shallowly curved. The body is elongated and round in cross section. The head is medium-sized. The snout is short and blunt, and its length is slightly shorter than the eye diameter. The eyes are large, rounded and biased towards snout. Inter orbital space flat. It has one pair of nostrils that is relatively large. The mouth is small and oblique, and opens in front of the snout. The lower jaw is slightly protruding from the upper jaw. The posterior end of the upper jaw reaches the anterior edge of the eye. Both jaws with many rows of small three-peak teeth, irregularly arranged in somewhat belt-like pattern. The palatine bone has small teeth. Gill openings wide. Gill rakers well developed. Body covered with large round scales. Only between the eyes, the snout, and the gill cover have no scales. Scales 32-37 in front of dorsal fin. The lateral line is clear, located on the lower part of the abdomen, is straight, and reaches the caudal fin base.

The base of dorsal fin is much longer than the base of anal fin and located at posterior back of body. The base of the anal fin is short, origin of the anal fin is located at below midpoint of base of the dorsal fin(7th-8th dorsal rays). The pectoral fin very long and begin at posterior end of head, ending at the center of the dorsal fin. The first soft ray at the top of the pectoral fin is unbranched, however, to be precise, the upper two rays are unbranched, because, anatomically, the first ray is degenerated and remain as trace that can feel it when touch with fingers. The caudal fin is deeply forked, the lower lobe longer than the upper lobe.

The dorsal side of the body is dark blue and the ventral side is silvery white. The dorsal fin has no markings, dark and almost transparent. The upper and lower edges of the pectoral fin are colorless and transparent, and the rest is dark and translucent. The caudal fin is blackish, and the anal and pelvic fins are slightly dark gray. Juveniles have short barbels on their lower jaws, and their body color can differ greatly from adults. It is epipelagic, warm-water fish. Spawning season is late spring to summer. They are caught when they appear in groups in the coastal waters during the spawning season. It feeds mainly on small floating crustaceans. It is used for grilled and dried fish, and sashimi and eggs are popular in season.

※ Issue/The English name of swallow flying fish, “Darkedged-wing flyingfish”, appears only in Japanese data and does not exist in other global data. Even in Korean literature, the English name is written as Darkedged-wing flyingfish, which seems to have been cited from Japanese sources. The meaning of the English name is that the edge of the pectoral fin is black, but it doesn't seem to match the reality. Therefore, I set the English name of this species as “Swallow flyingfish,” which is a direct translation of the Korean name “je-bi-nal-chi(제비날치)”
