분포; 서태평양/한국의 남해와 제주도, 일본 남부, 남중국해에 분포.
일반개요; 몸과 머리는 측편되었고 머리 위의 비늘 부위는 눈의 앞 경계에서 끝난다. 가라지속 어류 중에서 체고가 높은 편이다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미 끝에서 분리된 1개씩의 토막지느러미 (finlet)가 있다. 살아있을 때 꼬리지느러미와 가슴지느러미 및 제2등지느러미 앞쪽 상단에 붉은색을 띤다. 등은 암청색, 배는 은백색이다. 가슴지느러미는 제2등지느러미의 기점을 지난다. 외해 깊은 수심 대륙붕 변두리에 산다.

Distribution: Western Pacific/southern coasts and Jeju Island in Korea, southern Japan and South China Sea.
General: Head and body compressed. Predorsal scale area extending past anterior margin of pupil. One of the scads with deepest body depth. A finlet dorsally and ventrally on caudal peduncle. Caudal fin, pectoral fin, and anterior upper part of 2nd dorsal fin reddish when alive. Dorsally dark blue, ventrally silvery white. Pectoral fin reaching beyond the origin of 2nd dorsal fin. Found along shelf edge.
