분포; 전 세계 해양의 열대, 아열대 해역에 분포. 한국의 제주도에 분포.
일반개요; 몸은 길쭉하고 가늘며 몸의 단면은 어느 정도 원통형이다. 입은 작고 턱은 눈에 이르지 못한다. 아가미뚜껑 상단 가장자리에 까만 반점이 있다. 꼬리지느러미의 후단은 노랗다. 측선의 직선부는 앞쪽의 비늘 부분과 뒤쪽의 모비늘(scute) 부분으로 나뉘어져 있다. 등지느러미와 뒷지느러미 뒤에 토막지느러미가 1개씩 있다. 등쪽은 암청색이거나 녹청색. 배쪽은 은백색. 살아있을 때 체측 중심선에 밝은 푸른색 띠가 나타난다. 위턱에 이빨이 없다. 수면층에서부터 200m 수심 범위에서 무리로 유영생활을 한다. 동물플랑크톤을 먹는다.

Distribution: Circumtropical, Subtropical. Jeju Island in Korea.
General; Very slender, nearly cylindrical in cross section. Small mouth, jaw does not extend below eye. Dorsal and anal fins each followed by a separate finlet. Bluish green or dark blue dorsally, silvery below. Body with one lateral bright blue stripe when alive. Straight part of lateral line with scale part and scute part. Upper jaw without teeth. A small black spot on edge of opercle at level of eye. Caudal fin yellowish. Schooling species known from near the surface to 200m. Feeds on zooplankton.
