Distribution; Indo-Western Pacific/Jeju Island in Korea, Southern Japan, Ogasawara Islands, Taiwan, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo, Andaman Sea, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Lord Howe Island, Samoa, Hawaii, India, Maldives, Red Sea, East Africa.
General; Dendrochirus zebra, known commonly as the zebra turkeyfish or zebra lionfish among other vernacular names, is a species of marine fish in the family Scorpaenidae. The body shape is oval, and the head and body are flattened laterally. The body color is a mixture of orange red, white, and black. With 5-6 reddish brown vertical bars on body side behind head, alternating with narrow bars in larger individuals. A bar between eye and the first dorsal spine, which runs toward the middle edge of gill cover. A dark brown bar through the eye. A large dark spot on lower gill cover. 1 or 2 less dark spots on cheek.

The dorsal spines are light-colored and arranged with 2-4 dark bar-like spots along the ray. The membrane of the dorsal fin spine is connected to the adjacent spine only near the base. Mid-dorsal spines longer than body depth. The soft dorsal fin, caudal fin, and anal fin are almost transparent, and small black spots are arranged at regular intervals on each ray. With large, banded, fan-like pectoral fins that flare out on either side as the fish lies on the seabed. The front dorsal fin is made up of 13 tall, quill-like spines. The second dorsal fin, the anal fin, and the rounded caudal fin are transversely banded in black and white. The pectoral and pelvic fins are light yellow, with about six transverse reddish-yellow stripes the size of the eye pupils.

Usually shallow, from 3-60m but also reported to 80 m depth. It is a bottom-dwelling species and is found on coral, pebble, and rock bottoms on reef flats, outer reefs and lagoons and also in caves, sometimes in small groups. The zebra lionfish feeds on small crustaceans and fish, In turn preyed upon by groupers, but this needs to be confirmed.

Spawn in pairs. Courtship and spawning occur at night. Males aggressive, females are smaller and develop almost white face when in courtship. Spawning occurs at the apex of a short and rapid paired ascent resulting in a gelatinous mass of 2,000 to 15,000 eggs. Hatching occurs 36 hours later, live floating for a few weeks and settle out to the bottom. Has 13 venomous spines along its back, used to defend itself. These fish are slow-moving and peaceful, but can be dangerous. All lionfish are immune to each other's venom.

[Unique behavior] While originally described as solitary predators, zebra lionfish have more recently been observed exhibiting gregarious behavior both in the wild and in a laboratory setting, living and hunting together in groups of two or three. When hunting in groups, zebra lionfish herd their prey into a confined area using their venomous dorsal spines and flaring their fins to create a barrier. Individuals were observed taking turns striking at prey, and occasionally blowing jets of water at prey. Group hunting and water jet blowing behaviors have also been observed in invasive red lionfish in the Caribbean. Signaling turns in striking and fin flaring during group hunting observed in zebra lionfish, red lionfish, and spotfin lionfish, may indicate that the cooperative signaling and gregarious hunting behaviors may be characteristic of the lionfish family as a whole.
