Order Lampriformes(Velifers, tube-eyes and ribbonfishes) Family Trachipteridae(Ribbonfishes) Distribution; Western Pacific/South Sea of Korea including Jeju Island, southern Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand. Eastern Atlantic/Portugal to Mauritania, Guinean, Namibia and South Africa. Western Atlantic/Florida, USA and Cuba. Northern Indian Ocean/Pakistan and India. Probably circumtropical. Large specimen with relatively elongated, somewhat deep, compressed body, and long extended thin tail. Maximum body depth just behind of pelvic-fin base(However, adult fish lose their pelvic fins) Mouth directed upward, lower jaw slightly protruded ahead of upper jaw, Upper jaw can stretch forward. Both jaws with one row of small conical teeth, teeth extended to anterior tip of jaws. Body without scales. The body is covered with very small round projections with blunt tips. Ventral edge of body and the underside of the tail are smooth without any projections or spines. Small spines are arranged in one row along the lateral line to the front of the caudal fin. The lateral line starts at the top of the eye and run through the center of the body and ends in front of the caudal fin. The anus located in the center of the body. The posterior end of the maxilla reaches the midpoint of eye. In adults, the dorsal fin starts from the nape behind of eye and extends to the caudal fin, and in juveniles, the origin of the dorsal fin is above the center of the eye. Pectoral fin located on lower body and originating anterior to pelvic-fin origin. Pelvic fins close together. But pelvic-fin disappear in adults. Pelvic fin of juveniles apparently very long but rays of captured specimens are very often broken. Both adult and juvenile absent in anal fins. Caudal fin of adult fish is long and slender and faces backward. Caudal fin of juvenile directed upwards. Caudal fin not divided into two lobes and the number of rays seems to be reduced as growth. Body shape of juvenile is leaf shaped and obovate. In adults, dorsal profile of head descends steeply and curved on back, becoming straight along the tail. The ventral profile descends in a curved line from the front end of the mandible to the pelvic fin, then gradually ascends toward the anus and then continues to the straight tail. Body color of adult in live state is silvery white with pale reddish dorsal fin. Small juveniles are silvery with reddish fins, and with numerous and conspicuous dark spots that equal to pupil size and eye diameter. These spots are scattered on head and body. Spots on head small and larger spots are widely spaced posteriorly. Color in alcohol light brown, the dorsal fin membrane transparent, and the dark spots on side and back are faint but remain. This fish inhabits depth range of 150~500m. Feeds on various organisms like small fish, squids, octopus, and crustaceans |

Underwater photo of juvenile Polka-dot ribbonfish(Desmodema polystictum). Observed in Ecuador. Author/Creator-B(Publisher iNaturalist). Underwater photograph of live Desmodema polystictum is very rare. This is a picture of a young juvenile. For now, this is probably the only picture of Desmodema polystictum. The protagonist of the picture swims, hovering, standing upright near the water surface. If you look closely, the pelvic fin is waving while covering half of the body like a large skirt made of veil. The dorsal fin is also floating like a giant transparent flexible film. One observer said it looked like a jellyfish, I feel it |
