분포; 제주도 포함 남해, 일본 중부 이남, 서태평양, 오스트렐리아 북서부 인도양에 분포한다.
일반개요; 머리와 몸은 측편되었다. 몸의 등쪽은 붉으며 배쪽은 하얗다. 입 안쪽이 검은 색이다. 비늘이 크며 쉽게 떨어져 나간다. 측선공비늘 수는 41~46개이다. 80~200m 수심 저층부에 살며 갑각류와 연체동물을 주식한다. 식용어이다.

Distribution: Southern Korea, south of central Japan, Western Pacific and northwest Australia.
General: depressed head and body. Body red above, ventrally white. Scales large and deciduous. Inside of mouth cavity black. Depth range 80~200m. Feed on large crustaceans and mollusks. Utilized for human consumption.
