Order Perciformes Family Echeneidae(remoras, sharksuckers)
(Sharksucker)
Echeneis naucrates (Linnaeus, 1758). 110cm(TL)
D/soft ray34~42, A/soft ray31~41, P₁/21~24, P₂/spine1, soft ray5.
Order Perciformes(perch-likes) Family Echeneidae(remoras, sharksuckers)
Sharksucker
Korean. n. Bbal-pan-sang-eo (빨판상어)
Echeneis naucrates (Linnaeus, 1758). 110cm(TL)
Distribution: Circumglobal in tropical to warm temperate seas. Eastern and southern Korea.
General: Elongated cylindrical body with suction disc on top of head, disc with 18~28 laminae. The disc is derived from the spinous dorsal fin. Caudal fin lanceolate or rounded in young, almost truncate in adults. Pectoral fin pointed. Gray with a lateral, white-edged, black stripe from tip of lower jaw to base of caudal fin, indistinct in juveniles. Most abundant remora in warm waters. Often found free-swimming in shallow inshore areas. Attaches to a variety of hosts including sharks, rays, large bony fishes, sea turtles, whales, and also to ships. May attempt to attach to divers. If attach, push forward to release. Feeds on small fishes, bits of its host’s prey and host’s parasites. Sometimes used by natives to aid in fishing: a line is tied to the caudal peduncle of remora and then is released, upon attaching to another fish, the remora and its host are hauled in by the fisher.
