Lateral view of Saffron cod(Eleginus gracilis). |
Order Gadiformes Family Gadidae(Cods and haddocks). Distribution; Arctic to North Pacific: Northeast Korea, Hokkaido japan, Sea of Okhotsk, Bering Sea, Alaska, Dease Strait(south coast of Victoria Island in Canada). Distinguished by the presence of 3 dorsal and 2 anal fins. Origin of 1st anal fin below or slightly before 2nd dorsal fin origin. Pelvic fin small and the extended second ray is filamentous. The lateral line in the front part is curved to the center of the second dorsal fin, and the rest posterior line crosses the center of the body side in a straight line. Head with no lateral line pores. The anus is located just in front of anal fin. Grayish brown above, upper part of sides paler, sometimes with a silvery-violet shading, often mottled with indistinct darker blotches; lower sides and belly yellowish to silver white. Dorsal fins darkish brown, anal fin white or pale yellow. Pectoral fin grey, pelvic fin white. Caudal fin brown. Dorsal and caudal with white edges. The Korean name “bbal-gan-dae-gu” is translated into English as “Red Cod”, but this fish is actually yellowish-brown. I don't know what the etymology of the Korean name is. Occurs in shallow coastal waters less than 200m depth. Enters rivers and may go considerable distances upstream, but usually remaining within regions of tidal influence. Adults exhibit seasonal movements: inshore during winter for purposes of spawning and offshore during summer for feeding. Throughout its distribution area, spawning occurs during January-February in coastal zones of bays and inlets on sand-gravel substrate and in strong tidal currents. Saffron cods begin to mature during their third year of life. They feed on fish and small crustaceans. They are commercially fished in many areas of the northwestern Pacific. The country with the largest catch is Russia. It is used for human consumption in the Russian Federation and Japan, fresh or frozen. In Korea, it is caught by trawling and stationary net and compared to cod, it tastes poorer and is used as an ingredient for fish meal or dried and processed into a snack eaten with spirit drinks(Korean custom). Taxonomic problems to be solved. |
