분포; 인도•서태평양: 한국의 제주도, 일본 남부, 타이완, 동중국해, 서태평양, 페르시아 만에 분포. 일반개요; 가슴지느러미는 두 부분으로 나뉘고 아래쪽 4개의 연조는 막 없이 분리되어 실처럼 길다. 실처럼 생긴 연조는 전방으로 향할 수도 있으며 땅 속을 탐지하는 감각기능을 가졌다. 아래턱 뒤쪽의 작은 입술 말고는 입술이 없다. 살아있을 때 모든 지느러미들은 진노랑색이다(아주 큰 개체는 제외). 몸은 은백색이다. 꼬리지느러미는 깊게 패였고 상, 하엽의 끝이 뾰족하다. 연안 얕은 수심(0~23m)의 모래, 개펄 바닥에 서식하며 강으로도 들어간다. 저서 갑각류와 물고기를 먹는다. 수컷으로 성어가 되었다가 암컷으로 변한다. ※우측 사진 설명(Right photograph)/본종은 2미터까지 성장할 수 있는 대형어이다. 사진은 1미터짜리로 낚시에 잡힌 것이다. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: Jeju Island in Korea, southern Japan, Taiwan, East China Sea, western Pacific, northern Australia and Persian Gulf.
General: The pectoral fin divisible into an upper part with rays joined by membrane and a lower part of four separate soft rays that can be extended forward to make contact with the substratum: have sensory capability. Lips absent except for small section at rear of lower jaw. Fin membranes vivid yellow in life, except in large specimens. Body color silvery. Caudal fin deeply forked. Occur mainly over shallow sandy and muddy bottoms in coastal waters of 0~23m depth. Also enters rivers. Feed mainly on benthic crustaceans and small fishes. Protandrous hermaphrodites(commence mature life as males and change sex later to female.
