분포; 인도-태평양/동아프리카 해안(케냐 북부 등), 마다가스카르, 모리셔스, 세이셸, 코모로, 레위니옹, 차고스 제도, 일본 남부(류큐 열도, 이즈 제도), 대만, 마리아나 제도, 필리핀, 인도네시아, 호주 북부(그레이트 배리어 리프 포함), 미크로네시아, 폴리네시아(프렌치 폴리네시아) 전역에 분포하며 하와이 제도에는 1956년에 인위적으로 유입(도입종)된 기록이 있다. 홍해와 페르시아 만에는 분포하지 않는다.
일반개요; 몸은 방추형이며 옆으로 납작하다. 모든 지느러미와 전신에 대략 6각형의 갈색 점들이 꽉 들어차 있고 점들의 틈바구니마다 뚜렷한 백색의 작은 점들이 나타나 있다. 등지느러미의 기부를 따라 검은 점들이 모여 4 또는 6개의 반점 같은 모양을 이룬다. 측선 위쪽 앞부분, 가슴, 배 부위의 원린(둥근 비늘)을 제외하고는 몸 전체가 즐린(빗비늘)으로 덮여 있다. 또한 몸에는 부속 비늘(auxiliary scales)이 있다. 두 눈 사이는 편평하고 머리의 등선을 측면에서 보면 볼록한 선이다. 전새개골은 둥글다. 위턱은 눈의 후방 가장자리에 닿거나 지나친다. 전새개골(preopercle)은 둥글고, 아래쪽 톱니(serrae)들은 약간 비대해져 있다. 주새개골(operculum)의 윗 가장자리는 볼록하다; 아래턱의 옆면 중앙부에는 3~5줄의 이빨이 있다. 꼬리지느러미는 둥글다. 외해 암초의 비교적 얕은 수심에서 발견되며 위장을 잘하는 구루퍼이다. 단독 생활을 한다. 물고기와 갑각류를 주식한다.

※ 국제적으로는 알락우럭(Epinephelus quoyanus) 또는 넓적코 구루퍼(Snubnose grouper: Epinephelus macrospilos)와 혼동을 잘 일으키는 종의 하나이다.

Distribution: Most tropical Indo-West Pacific islands. None have been taken on the African coast, except for the specimen recorded by Randall and Heemstra 1991 from Kenyan coast north of Kilifi Creek. It is an insular species found in most tropical Indo-Pacific islands. Absent in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf.
General: Body shape fusiform, and laterally compressed. Small but conspicuous white spots on the corners of the brown hexagons of the vertical fins and all of the body except the belly; four to six dark blotches along the dorsal fin base, further characterized by having ctenoid scales on body except cycloid anterodorsally above lateral line, on thorax and abdomen; body with auxiliary scales. Greatest depth of body 2.8-3.5 in SL; pelvic fins 1.8-2.1 in head length, HL 2.5-2.6 times in SL; flat interorbital area, convex dorsal head profile; rounded preopercle, slightly enlarged ventral serrae; upper edge of operculum convex; posterior and anterior nostrils subequal; maxilla reaches to or past vertical at rear edge of eye; smoothly curved ventral edge of maxilla; 3-5 rows of teeth on midlateral part of lower jaw. Caudal fin rounded. Common in exposed outer-reef areas in relatively shallow water. Well-camouflaged grouper, solitary. Feeds mainly on fishes and crustaceans(stomatopods and brachyuran crabs).
