분포; 서태평양/한국의 남해, 일본 남부, 중국해, 뉴칼레도니아에 분포.
일반개요; 머리와 몸이 측편되었고 체고가 낮은 편이다. 머리를 제외한 몸 전체에 작은 비늘이 덮여 있다. 죽은 개체는 등은 은청색 배는 백색이지만 살아있을 때는 희미한 황갈색이다. 등에 검은색의 큰 벌레무늬가 있다. 튀어나가는 입은 하향 돌출형이다. 연안에서 무리지어 산다. 튀어나오는 주둥이로 먹이를 찾는다.

Distribution: Western Pacific/South Sea of Korea, southern Japan, China Seas, and New Caledonia.
General: Head and body compressed, body depth relatively low. Head naked. Silvery grey dorsally and white ventrally in spirits, but pale brownish when alive. Upper half of body with relatively large vermiculate dark markings. Mouth protractile ateroventrally. Searches for prey using protruding pipette-like mouth. Found near shore, schooling species.
