일반개요; 몸은 측편되었고, 난형이다. 머리 부분의 체고가 가장 높으며 뒤로 갈수록 낮아진다. 몸의 등쪽과 배쪽의 윤곽선은 완만하게 곡선을 이룬다. 외관상 벨벳같이 보이지만 무수한 가시 비늘로 덮여 있는 것이어서 표면이 거칠다. 눈은 작고 머리의 등 쪽 외곽선 가까이에 있으며 두 눈 사이는 평탄하며 1개의 돌기가 있다. 눈 뒤쪽에는 1쌍의 날카로운 가시가 있고 눈의 앞가장자리에는 4개의 날카로운 가시가 있다. 전새개골(preopercle)에 4개의 날카로운 가시가 있다. 입은 주둥이 끝에 있으며 경사가 크게 위쪽으로 비스듬하게 열려 있다. 위턱이 아래턱보다 약간 짧다. 양턱과 서골에 이빨이 있으며 구개골에도 이빨 띠(치대)가 1개 있다. 부레를 가지고 있다. 

등지느러미 기점은 안구의 뒤쪽 경계선 위에 있으며 국조부와 연조부가 연속적이며 위쪽을 향해 높게 확장되어 있다. 등지느러미의 제3~제5 사이에 있는 2개의 지느러미 막은 밑으로 패여 있다. 제1번 가시 길이는 체장(standard body length)의 14-19%이다. 등지느러미는 눈 뒤끝에서 시작되어 위로 길게 뻗어 있다. 가슴지느러미는 폭이 넓고 비교적 길어서 항문에 달한다. 등지느러미의 연조부에 비해서 뒷지느러미는 매우 작다. 꼬리지느러미의 뒤끝은 둥글다. 측선은 몸의 등쪽에 치우쳐 비스듬이 경사져 꼬리지느러미 앞까지 뻗어 있다.

몸은 연한 갈색 바탕에 동공 크기보다 조금 큰 적갈색의 무늬가 고루 분포하며, 배쪽은 희다. 등지느러미는 노란색 바탕에 연조(soft ray)부는 어둡다. 가슴지느러미 기저부는 노란색을 띠지만 바깥쪽은 검다. 배지느러미는 희고, 뒷지느러미 기저부는 노란색을 띠며 바깥쪽은 검다. 꼬리지느러미는 기저에서 2분의 1 지점까지는 노란색을 띠며 후반부는 검다. 바닥이 모래나 진흙으로 된 얕은 바다에 서식한다. 가시에 맹독이 있어 위험한 종이며, 먹이로는 소형 어류, 요각류 등을 주로 먹는다. 자원량은 많으나 경제적인 가치는 없다. 관상어 시장에서는 희귀하게 발견된다.

Distribution; Western Pacific/Southern coasts of the Korean Peninsula. South of Hokkaido Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Hainan Island(China), North Philippines, Thailand, Maluku Islands of Indonesia, New Caledonia.(Source/AquaMaps, 2019, October).
General; Body laterally compressed and ovate. Body depth highest at the head, and tapering lower posteriorly. The dorsal and ventral outlines are shallowly curved. The skin looks like velvet in appearance, but it has rough surface because it is covered with countless spiny scales fine spines. The eyes are small, located near the dorsal outline of head, space between the eyes is flat and there is one protrusion. A pair of sharp spines on the back of the eye and 4 sharp spines on the front edge of the eye. The preopercle has 4 sharp spines. Mouth located at the tip of snout, and open upwards with sharp incline. Upper jaw is slightly shorter than lower jaw. Upper and lower jaws and vomer with villiform teeth; palatine with a tooth plate. With swim bladder.

The dorsal fin is continuous, starting above the posterior edge of the orbit and extends upward. 2 membranes between 3rd and 5th dorsal spine are notched. The first spine is 14-19% of the standard body length. The pectoral fin is wide and relatively long, reaching the anus. Anal fin is very low compared to the soft part of the dorsal fin. Margin of caudal fin is round. The lateral line is biased toward the back of body and extends to the front of the caudal fin at an oblique angle.

The body is evenly distributed with reddish-brown patterns slightly larger than the pupil size on light brown background, and ventral side is white. The ground color of dorsal fin is yellow and the soft ray part is dark. The base of the pectoral fin is yellow, but the outside is black. The pelvic fin is white. Base of anal fin is yellow with blackish outside. The caudal fin is yellow from the base to the second half, and the latter part is black. Inhabits shallow seas with sandy or muddy bottom. A dangerous species due to its poisonous spines. Feed mainly on small fish and copepods. It has a lot of resources, but has no economic value. Rare aquarium species.
