분포; 인도•서태평양/한국의 동해 남부와 남해, 일본 남부, 남중국해에 분포하고 먼 거리를 건너 뛰어 남아프리카, 오만 걸프에서 발견된다.
일반개요; 몸통부의 단면이 약간 둥글다. 입술을 제외한 몸 전체에 비늘이 덮여 있으며 비늘은 작다. 위턱 뒤끝은 넓고 둥글다. 살아있을 때 등쪽은 어두운 황적색 그 아래는 황적색 다시 그 아래는 밝아지면서 광택을 낸다. 지느러미들은 황적색이다. 죽은 개체는 “등쪽이 암적색 또는 회청색 배쪽은 분홍빛을 띤 은백색”으로 기술되어 있다. 수심 100~350m의 바위 암초 지대에 산다. 새우를 주식하며 작은 물고기도 잡아 먹는다.
※ bonnet mouth: 선홍치의 입을 정면에서 보았을 때 벌어진 모습이 보닛 모자와 같다는 뜻에서.

※양초선홍치(Emmelichthys struhsakeri)와 다른점: 선홍치의 체고가 더 높다. 양초선홍치는 미병부에 융기선이 없으나 선홍치는 체장 20cm가 넘으면 뚜렷한 융기선이 나타난다. 제1등지느러미와 제2등지느러미는 선홍치의 경우 지느러미막으로 연결되어 있으나 양초선홍치의 경우는 연결부의 가시 2~3개가 지느러미막 없이 고립되어서 두 지느러미는 연결되지 못한다.

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific/known only from southern Korean Peninsula, southern Japan, South Africa and Gulf of Oman. Reported from South China Sea.
General: Cross section of body somewhat round. Posterior part of upper jaw broad and rounded. Entire body except the lips covered with small scales. Brown red to red orange dorsally, pale ventrally, and fins yellowish red when alive. Dark red or bluish grey dorsally, silvery white with pinkish tinge below in spirits. Caudal peduncle with keel, but indistinct in specimens smaller than 20cm SL. Upper posterior margin of gill cavity with 2 fleshy papillae. Rocky reefs from 100 to 350m depth. Feed mainly on shrimps and also on small fishes.
