영명 Wasp scorpionfishes의 Wasp는 말벌을 말하며 scorpionfishes는 전갈고기의 뜻이다. 양볼락과에서 분리되어 과로 승격한 분류군이다. 양볼락과에 포함시키는 분류도 아직 존재하고 있다. 세계에 3속 3종, 한국에 1속 1종이 알려져 있다. 인도-태평양에 분포한다. 가슴지느러미에 1개 또는 3개의 분리 기조가 있다. 부레가 2개의 엽으로 구성되어 있다. 아주 작은 물고기로 곱사등 벌감펭(Humpback waspfish/Cheroscorpaena tridactyla)은 전장이 15cm이고 짧은팔벌감펭(waspfish/Apistops caloundra)과 한국 분포종 벌감펭(Ocellated waspfish)은 20cm 이다. 과의 학명 Apistidae는 그리스어의 apistos이며 뜻은 의심스러운 용의자이다.

Family Apistidae(Wasp scorpionfishes).
It is a taxa separated from the family Scorpaenidae and promoted to the family. Classifications to be included in the Scorpaenidae still exist. 3 genera, 3 species worldwide, 1 genus with 1 species in Korea. Distribute in Indo-west Pacific. One or three free lower pectoral rays and a bilobed swim bladder. They are fairly small fishes reaching lengths of 15 centimetres TL in Cheroscorpaena tridactyla to 20 centimetres TL in Apistops caloundra and Apistus carinatus(distribute in Korea). Etymology/Greek, apistos = suspicious.
