Family Aulostomidae(trumpetfishes). Family 295

Family Aulostomidae(trumpetfishes). Family 295

1 genera 3 species worldwide. Distribute in tropical Atlantic and Indo-Pacific, two species in the Atlantic and one in the Indo-Pacific. Highly specialized, tubular-elongated marine fishes similarly built, closely related cornetfishes family Fistulariidae. Compressed and elongate body. Similar to most members of the order Syngnathiformes, the bodies of trumpetfish are musculature, inflexible, supported by struts of bone that appear interwoven.  Well developed lateral line.

A series of 8-12 isolated dorsal spines preceeding a soft dorsal fin having 23-28 rays. Anal fin with 25-28 fin rays. Total vertebrae 59-64: abdominal 24-26 and caudal 35-38. Their dorsal and anal fins are closely adjacent to the tail, Anus and pelvics far apart. Rounded caudal fin. A distinct trait of the family is their long, tubular snouts ending with somewhat nondescript jaws. Lower jaw with fleshy barbel at the tip. Members of the family have the capability to expand their jaws quickly into a circular, gaping hole almost to the body's diameter when feeding.

Usually occuring on reefs alongside larger herbivorous fish or in a head-down vertical orientation, They stalk their prey by hovering almost motionlessly a few inches above the substrate, inching their way towards unsuspecting prey. Once close enough, they rapidly dart in and expand their jaws rapidly. Opening their tube-like mouths in quick succession creates a strong suction force, which draws prey straight into the mouth. Aulostomids are known to feed almost exclusively on small, schooling reef fishes. Oviparous, gonochorous, with pelagic eggs. Recorded maximum length 80 cm.
