Family Bathylagidae(Deep-sea smelts) 샛멸과(Argentinidae)와 비슷하게 생겼다. Family Bathylagidae(Deep-sea smelts) Similar to the family Argentinidae. Generally compressed laterally; some rather deep-bodied with deepcaudal peduncle; others with a robust body tapering to a narrow caudal peduncle; still others slender. Anal fin originating on posterior third of body, and many species with an elongated base. Pectoral fins originating slightly behind head and close to ven-tral surface of body. Dorsal adipose fin present or absent. Scales deciduous. Mouth small; Eyes large and directed laterally in some species, anterolaterally in others, but not tubular. Supra-orbital bones present. Interorbital space not very narrow, more than half as wide as depth of caudal peduncle. Photophores absent, but luminous tissue reported on scales and fins of one species. Swim bladder absent. Teeth present on head of vomer and lower jaw, jaw teeth in single row and compressed; no teeth on maxillae or premaxillae. present or absent on palatines. Gill membranes broadly united and separate from isthmus. Two general types of coloration. One, seemingly characteristic of species of the deeper water layers, consists of black fragments of skin around the scale pockets; these species may be relatively dark in life. The second type, found in fishes which usually inhabit the upper water layers, is predominately light, usually with considerable amounts of silvery pigment on the body and head. They feed on plankton, especially krill. Pelagic eggs and larvae, some larvae have their eyes set off from the head on short stalks. Caught singly or in aggregations. No commercial importance but variable importance as forage.

One of the body shapes of deep-sea smelts. The high depth of the front body begins to narrow immediately as it goes back, and ends with a very thin peduncle. The species name is recorded as Antarctic deepsea smelt(Bathylagus antarcticus) in Wikimedia, but when compared with other sources, the Wikimedia’s species name seems to be incorrect. So I record this depiction as “Unknown deep-sea smelt fish/Bathylagus.sp” Original source/Date;1982. Guide to the Sea Fishes of New Zealand. Author; Dr Tony Ayling
