Family Chlorophthalmidae(Greeneyes) The largest species, the Shortnose greeneye (Chlorophthalmus agassizi) reaches a length of 40 cm, but most other species are much smaller. Body of Greeneyes is slender, compressed posteriorly, nearly rounded in cross section anteriorly. Their heads are small with large jaws. Pseudobranch(reduced first gill arch of a fish) present; tip of upper jaw not extending beyond orbit; pyloric caeca present. No spines in fins. Has a single dorsal fin, with 9-13; segmented rays anal fin 7-11 segmented rays. A fleshy adipose fin posteriorly above or just posterior to point of insertion of anal fin. Pectoral fins large, reaching beyond end of dorsal fin, with 15 to 20 fin rays. Caudal fin bilobed. branchiostegal rays 8; vertebrae 38-50. Scales ctenoid(rough) or cycloid(smooth), present on cheek, opercle and body, those on sides of head usually lost during capture; top of head naked. Their coloration ranges from a yellowish to blackish brown, and some species have cryptic blotches, sometimes with dusky mottlings. Aside from their eyes, some species also have iridescent patches covering their heads. Greeneyes are generally deepwater fish, found from 50 to 1,000 m (160 to 3,280 ft). They seem to prefer the continental slopes and shelves, possibly forming schools. Greeneyes are bottomdwelling fishes associated with mud or clay. Greeneyes are known to primarily feed on benthic invertebrates, as well as pelagic crustaceans such as decapods and mysids. Like many aulopiform fish, all are synchronous hermaphrodites possessing both maturing ovarian and testicular tissue in the ovotestis. This is thought to be a great advantage in deep-sea habitats, where the chances of running into a compatible mate are uncertain. Young and larval greeneyes are pelagic rather than benthic, staying within the upper levels of the water column. Hake are known predators of greeneyes. Some species are of interest to commercial and subsistence fisheries; the fish are made into fish meal or sold fresh. These small fishes are at present of no commercial importance. But they are rather common and largely taken as trash fish by bottom trawls along the edge of the continental shelf. |

Under white light, this shortnose greeneye fish(Chlorophthalmus agassizi) looks unimpressive. But, in dim blue light—the type usually seen at depth—it shows its true fluorescent colors. NOAA scientists collected this specimen during a 2004 expedition for optical studies. The scientists believe the green flourescence of the fish’s eye lenses help it detect prey better in dimly lit water. Bioluminescent creatures emit and produce their own light, whereas fluorescence is the emission of light by a substance—not always living—that has absorbed light or other radiation of a different wavelength. Animals use bioluminescence for many reasons including communication, but fluorescent creatures depend on the light to determine when they "glow." According to the scientists who were part of NOAA's 2004 expedition, the shortnose greeneye fish's lens absorbs light that comes from the surface of the ocean, but it lets through the turquoise-colored light of most bioluminescence creatures. This allows the fish to discern the color of its prey in deep ocean waters. |
