Family Congridae(Conger and garden eels).

Garden eels(Heterocongrinae)

 Congridae(Conger and garden eels).
30 genera, 197 species worldwide, 6 genera with 11 species in Korea. Families Congridae has been subdivided into 3 subfamilies; subfamily Bathymyrinae, subfamily Congrinae, and Subfamily Heterocongrinae(garden eels). Found in tropical, subtropical, and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and West Pacific oceans. Conger eels(deep sea conger eels and conger eels) have few characteristics that can distinguish the species outwardly. However, conger eels are different from garden eels  Their bodies are rounded at the front and become compressed towards the rear. Have large heads and mouths. Tail longer than the rest of head and body. All Conger Eels have relatively large eyes, a tubular front nostril, and a rear nostril that is usually found on the side of the head in front of the eyes. They have well-developed upper and lower lip flanges and small lateral gill openings. All fins are spineless Anal and dorsal fins are continuous with caudal fin. Do not have pelvic fins. Body without scales; Usually with pectoral fins. Dorsal-fin origin about level with or not far behind the gill openings. Lateral line prominent. Strong teeth. Rather modest dentition that is typically in the form of bands of small teeth on the jaws and the roof of the mouth Branchiostegal rays 8-22. Vertebrae 105-225.  Most species are gray. Conger eels are seldom brightly colored. Conger eels are bottom-dwellers and can be found at depths of up to 90 m. Conger eels are often used as a food fish. The Congridae normally burrow in sand tail first during the day and forage at night. Unlike some other eels, do not migrate to breed. The European conger(Conger conger) is the largest of the family and of the Anguilliformes order that includes it; it has been recorded at up to 3 m in length and weighing 160 kg. They feed on crustaceans and small fish.

Garden eels(Heterocongrinae)
Most speces are found in the Indian and western Pacific oceans, but there are some species found in the Caribbean and east Pacific Ocean. The largest species reaches about 120 cm in length, but most species do not surpass 60 cm, the body greatly elongate and the pectoral and caudal fins reduced or absent. Conger eels are seldom brightly colored, but the garden eels(Heterocongrinae)  vary greatly in colour depending on the exact species involved. Garden eels are bottom dwellers. Live in colonies but live individually in burrows. Garden eels get their name from the fact that when they rise up from their individual burrows on the sandy ocean floor looking for plankton, they look like a gently waving garden of plants. Garden eel colonies can grow as large as one acre in surface area. As other congrids, mating and spawning apparently takes place without any lengthy migration.

Characteristic behavior of Conger Leptocephali(larvae)
Leptocephali(larvae) showed curling behavior which make them resemble gelatinous zooplankton, e.g. jellyfishes, in observations made at Osprey Reef, Coral Sea. This behavior could be an evolved response to threats by potential predators according to this study. Observations of the curling bahavior were captured in this video link: http://australianmuseum.net.au/Leptocephalus-curling-behavior

※However, in July 2018, a paper was published in the taxonomic media(ZOOTAXA and Magnolia Press), saying that Beach conger(Conger japonicus) is a synonym of whitespotted conger(Conger myriaster).
