선홍치과 Family Emmelichthyidae(Rovers)
세계에 3속 15종, 한국에 2속 2종이 알려져 있다. 인도양, 태평양, 동대서양, 서대서양(카리브해)의 열대, 아열대 해역에 분포한다. 몸통은 약간 둥글고 긴 방추형이다. 이빨이 없거나 몇 개 되지 않는다. 입은 앞으로 튀어나갈 수 있는 구조이다. 위턱의 뒤끝이 넓다. 등지느러미는 1개이거나 가운데 극조의 막이 끊어져서 2개인 것도 있다. 꼬리지느러미는 안으로 깊이 패였으며 상엽과 하엽은 가위처럼 벌어졌다 좁아졌다 할 수 있다. 성어는 주로 100~400m 수심의 바닥 쪽에서 산다.

3 genera with about 15 species, 2 genera with 2 species in Korea. Marine, primarily tropical to warm temperate waters of Indo-Pacific, southern Pacific, eastern Atlantic and Caribbean Sea. Jaws toothless or nearly so, very protractile. Supramaxilla well developed. Dorsal fin continuous but slight notch(Plagiogeneion), divided to base or with an apparent gap with intervening isolated short spines. Caudal fin forked with the two lobes folding in scissorlike fashion. Adults are usually near the bottom in depth of 100~400m.
