김노투스과(민등칼고기과) Family Gymnotidae(Naked-back knifefishes).
Family Gymnotidae(Naked-back knifefishes). The family has about 43 valid species in two genera(Gymnotus and Electrophorus). Naked-back knifefishes are restricted to freshwaters of Central and South America. Body eel-like (compressed or rounded); about 100 vertebrae(31-43 precaudals); pelvic girdle and fins absent; dorsal fin absent. Anal fin extremely long from near pectorals to near tip of body, used for movement. All have organs adapted to electroreception. These knife fishes use electricity to assist in their movement and navigation in the water due to their limited vision. Except for electric eels, all other species emit weak electric charge. Nocturnal fishes, mostly occurring in quiet waters from deep rivers to swamps. May bury themselves in the substrate in strongly flowing waters. Species of Gymnotus range from about 10–100 cm in total length. The electric eel is the largest of the gymnotiform fishes, growing up to more than 2.3 m length.
The electric eel(Genus Electrophorus) was formerly independent as family Electrophoridae and then absorbed into the family Gymnotidae. For a very long time, it was known that there was only one species of electric eel(species name: Electrophorus electricus), but research results(by C. David de Santana and colleagues) were published in 2019 suggesting that the known electric eel should be separated into three species. In other words, there are actually 3 types, but had been mistakenly thought as 1 species. The three species are Electrophorus electricus, Electrophorus voltaic, and Electrophorus varii. Therefore, the common name “electric eel”, which has been used for a long time, has come to refer to only one-third of electric eels. There are no common names for the rest two new species yet. Electric eel produces both strong(up to 600 volts) and weak(<1 V) electric discharges, for use in predation and communication/navigation, respectively.
