Family Isonidae(Isonids)

(Iso flosmaris; Flower of the surf)

• Iso flosmaris D. S. Jordan & Starks, 1901(Flower of the surf/
• Iso hawaiiensis Gosline, 1952 (Hawaiian surf sardine)
• Iso natalensis Regan, 1919 (surf sprite)
• Iso nesiotes Saeed, Ivantsoff & Crowley, 1993 (Samoan surf sardine)
• Iso rhothophilus (J. D. Ogilby, 1895) (flower of the wave)

그 후 1901년에 다른 어류 학자들(Jordan and Starks)이 일본에서 채집된 한 신종의 학명을 아이소 플로스마리스(Iso flosmaris)로 명명했는데 오길비가 발견한 “flower of the wave(Tropidostethus rhothopilus)”와 닮은 데가 많아서 서프은줄멸과(Notocheiridae)에 집어 넣었다.

Family Isonidae(Isonids)
The first species reported as a new species among the five species in the genus “Iso” was a fish collected in Australia in 1895(Ogilby) and called "flower of the wave". After twists and turns, the scientific name changed as Iso rhothophilus. After that, in 1901, another congener fish was discovered in Japan, and the scientific name of this species was determined as Iso flosmaris. The scientific name of Iso rhothophilus was Tropidostethus rhothophilus at first, but the scientific name of the next reported species was Iso flosmaris, and this scientific name was recognized for its validity. Therefore, “Tropidostethus” was modified to the genus name “Iso” accordingly.

Information about the etymology of the scientific name “Iso flosmaris” is not found, but if I do my own interpretation, Iso means “equal” or “similar” in Greek, and flosmaris is a compound word of Latin flos(flower) and maris(marine, sea). In other words, it is solved as “equal to flower of the sea”. The genus name was fixed as Iso because the scientific name “Iso flosmaris” was used at the beginning of taxonomic studies. Family Isonidae consists of only one genus, the Iso, and includes five species(as of 2023). Iso flosmaris is a species distributed in Korea. Members of genus Iso(Family Isonidae) are distributed in the Indo-Pacific. In English, they are often called as “surf sardines”, but the Iso members are not herring of the family Clupeidae.

Five species of genus Iso were originally included in the family Notocheiridae(surf silversides), but were branched out by establishing new family Isonidae(Isonids) in the year around 2020. The family Notocheiridae originally included one species of Notocheirus hubbsi in addition to five species of the genus Iso. After the reclassification, only the Notocheirus hubbsi remained alone in family Notocheiridae. Internet search for fishes of the genus Iso often appear that these species are belong to the family Notocheiridae, instead of family Isonidae, thus causing confusion.

[Designation history of Family Isonidae and Family Notocheiridae is fraught with confusion]
The process by which the family Isonidae and the family Notocheiridae were created has a very confusing past. William Ogilby(1805–1873), an Irish zoologist, identified a fish collected in Australia as a new species, gave it the common name “flower of the wave,” the scientific name Tropidostethus rhothopilus, and classified it in the Family Notocheiridae. Then, in 1901, other ichthyologists Jordan and Starks) named a new species collected in Japan as “Iso flosmaris”, which is similar to the “flower of the wave(Tropidostethus rhothopilus)” discovered by Ogilvy. Because it has many similarities, it placed in the Notocheiridae. Iso flosmaris is a species also distributed in Korea and Korean common name is 물꽃치(=water flower fish). In 1919, it was revealed that the genus name Tropidostethus had already been applied to insects, so the genus name was changed to Iso, and Tropidostethus rhothopilus was revised to Iso rhothopilus. As the family composition of Family Notocheiridae went up and down, the family member expanded to include one species of genus Notocheirus(Notocheirus hubbsi) and five species of genus Iso. Notocheirus hopsi was designated as a new species in 1937, and the specimen was discovered in Chile. About in 1944, claims began to be made that Notocheirus hubbsi had a slightly different lineage from the genus Iso, and in 1950, Notocheirus hubbsi was subdivided into the subfamily(Notocheirinae). Finally, around 1996, the genus Iso became independent from the Family Notocheiridae and established the new Family Isonidae(Isonids), leaving only one species, Notocheirus hopsi, in the family Notocheiridae. However, confusion arises because there is still information that indicates the Isonids are in the Family Notocheiridae rather than in the Family Isonidae
